Hi girls, had my consultant app this morn and was really upset.

Basically i have history of heart problems in the family, i have been monitored very closely (Echos and ECG's) and everything has been fine so far. My cousin gave birth and ended up in a coma for 3 months due to the pressure on her heart which is why i have such a fear of trying a natural birth. As my heart looks fine so far they are pushing me to try a natural birth.

I told my consultant about my fears and said i was worried that if labour puts to much pressure on my heart im scared they knock me out and give me an emergency section, i think i would struggle to cope with that.

He has booked me in for a section but says he thinks im making a huge mistake! He has suggested seeing a physcologist for "my fear of childbirth and my heart condition!"

I was so sure about what i wanted and now im confused and upset.

what should i do?

Well, it is YOUR decision. It is not the approach I would take, personally -- I am high risk due to a heart condition and I still want to do everything I can to have an unmedicated vaginal birth. A C section is major surgery and carries a lot more risks than vaginal birth, plus it makes subsequent births more dangerous if you want to have more children. That's why having a vaginal birth is important to me. BUT, it is your decision.

That said, talking to a counselor probably isn't a bad idea no matter what you decide. There's a lot that they can do to help with anxiety of any sort. Whether or not it changes your decision, it may make you feel better about the whole thing and less as though fear is forcing your hand.

I know it can be really scary to face the possibility of serious medical complications. I hope you feel at peace with whatever you decide and that it all goes well. :hugs:

i did a c-section because i had fears of tearing and i didnt want that. but my doctor was recommending a c-section because of the scar tissue i had at 20 weeks because my emergency surgery. i also chose this because everyone i my family and in his was fighting over who would be in the room during the birth and only 1 person could be and of course i chose her father. its completly your choice. if yoh have those fears then go with a c-section if it makes you relax. if your scared of the surgery dont. you are awake yes but you dont feel a thing.

I say go with your gut. If you feel a c-section is the best way for you to enjoy the birth of your child then who cares what that doc "thinks". This is your birth. You are meant to enjoy not fear. Good luck to you hun. :hugs:
