LO has cmpi and silent reflux, the dr thinks.

She has been moved from c&g pepti to neocate......no one IRL i know seems to use carobel but the dr said i may as well stick with it.

What do others do? I'm worried the carobel makes her slow digestion and bowel end worse but assume it may be helping the acid kn her throat a little.
So overwhelmed by it all, we are now on ranitidine, omeprazole and domperidone :(

My son didn't get on with carobel gave him terrible trapped wind, Neocate is really thin so if she suffers bad with it and gets on ok with carobel I dont see why not, neocate can give them trouble having a bowel movement but that soon passes once there tummies get used to it. Also the paed told me that if lo does have cmpi then that is what causes the reflux however his exzema cleared up but he still refluxes.

I would say LO is worse with her bottom end than with her throat and she has been on carobel for 7 weeks.....she's now on so much tbh that i find it hard to know what is and isnt working.

She has a very slow bowel, not constipated but poos every 2 days or so and i think the carobel has done that.

:hugs: my DD has CMPA which was also causing - or at least making worse - reflux. She is still on neocate, carobel and ranitidine, but we have recently been able to stop the domperidone... So basically we have been in a very similar situation and I know how overwhelming it can all feel...

How long have u been on the different things if you don't mind me asking? Neocate started to make a diff with DD quite quickly in terms of reflux and general pain, but took about 5 weeks before her bowels were fully better. The paed said they are
the slowest thing to recover. So my personal opinion would be that if you have been on the neocate for less than 6 weeks then it is probably worth waiting and giving it all a chance to work before changing anything?

There is nothing in carobel other than carob beans to thicken the milk and keep it in the tummy better (hence helping the reflux)... so I'd be surprised if LO was reacting to it, and I've never heard of it causing bowels to slow - although I could be wrong. (Our issue was explosive mucus diarrhoea rather than constipation). Also, the domperidone will be acting to speed everything up.

So personally I would keep on with it, especially as LO has probably got used to thicker milk by now and neocate is VERY thin, so might not be impressed with a sudden change!

I hope things get better for you and your LO soon :flower:

When my LO was put on Neocate I stopped giving her the carobel for several reasons. The first one is that I wanted to see what the neocate did on its own. The second was that up until then the carobel did very little other than to make her puke a bit thicker (niiiice!) and third I just wanted to stop putting extra crap into her tiny body!

We discovered she puked just as much on neocate, so not an allergy, just good old fashioned reflux, so she came off it again, but I haven't put anything in her bottles other than formula since.

I don't have experience with Carobel or the formulas here but to be on all three medications at one time isn't generally recommended in the long term here. Have you been told to drop the ranitidine anytime soon? I know that here, if omperazole is given you can continue the use of ranitidine for up to two weeks as it can take that long for omperazole to work, but after that you need to stop using it. You might want to double check this. Omperazole is a very strong med and normally a last resort so you might find you can drop one or both of the others.

In terms of moving formulas I would try without carobel. If all is ok that's one med down. If not, you can use it again

Thanks all,

She's only been on the neocate and omeprazole a week (previously presxription c&g pepti), the ranitidine, domeperidone and carobel we've been on 7 weeks......the Dr is happy she's on them all and we don't review now for 3months - obviously i don't plan to keep her on them all.

I've cut the carobel in half and already it seems to have speeded her bowel up to now going daily. I'm sure the domepridone does nothing for her, so that'll be the first thing we cut.
With the carobel i've noticed when i leave a formula bottle it sort of separates and leaves a clear liquid, it's this clear liquid she vomits up, rarely the milky part!

Hi. Just a thought. Did you know that you cant give the ranitidine 2 hours before and after giving the Omeprazole? as it stops it working. Also domperidone needs to be given 20 mins before a feed for it to be effective. If your not already doing so.
My lg is also on Neocate, alongside Omeprazole, domperidone and gaviscon. If i were you i would drop the ranitidine as the Omeprazole does the same job and better. It can take a while to work and remember the dose can go up to 20mg. Whats her current dose?
Ive had no experience with carobel but have had great results with gaviscon. If already having bowel problems then gaviscon can often make it worse so maybe not best thing for your lo.
