Hi there, I have just come across your post and thought I would say hello.

My name is Leanne, I am 29 and have suffered from PCOS since I was 17. I am the same as you, I can go months (used to be years) without a period, have lots of excess facial hair and body hair, have problems with my weight and acne.

It actually took my doctor 5 years to finally send me for tests to be done which confirmed PCOS. I got put on Dianette birth control which regulated my periods but as soon as I stopped taking that they completely stopped.

When me and my fiance had been together for a few years we decided we wanted to start a family. All my doctor kept telling me to do was lose weight. I am quite overweight but found it hard to lose it with the PCOS. I went to the gym 4 times a week, ate healthy, walked a lot and didnt lose any weight. After changing my doctor about 4 times I finally found a doctor that listened to me. She put me on dieting pills called Xenical which, if taken properly works wonders! I lost a few stone, but still didn't get pregnant, finally after lots of blood tests I got referred to a fertility clinic. We had by this time been ttc for just over 2 years.

In my case though I went to the first appointment at the fertility clinic and found out i had conceived naturally! I was so shocked! I'm now 31 weeks pregnant.

Anyway, sorry for going on and on, I just wanted to let you know that having PCOS can be a pain in the backside but you do learn to live with it, and don't give up with ttc. I think the majority of women who want to have children and do have PCOS go on to having healthy babies. I know a lot of women who have taken metformin and clomid and have all given birth, so don't give up. I do also believe that losing weight, if you are overweight does help a lot especially with the facial hair and ttc.

If you ever want to chat don't hesitate to contact me.

Good Luck

Leanne x

Hey there - been suffering PCOS for years.

Chances of TTC and mc will vary wildly from one person to the next - some have insulin resistance causing hormonal inbalances inc excess male hormones ( which promotes facial hair ) and knocks the female hormones out of whack, some ladies don't ovulate others do, some have more severe PCOS so probably not one of us is the same!!

They advise the low GI diet as, due to the insulin resistance ( which is why they prescribe metformin ) this diet promotes food low on the glycemic index which means they release slowly and avoid sugar spikes.

Weightloss is always advised as extremly beneficial but it is hard with pcos - particularly with insulin resistance for the below reason :

With Insulin resistance the glucose taken from food isn’t sent into the bloodstream properly, so it never gets converted into energy for the body to use. The glucose begins to build up in the blood, but the cells still aren’t getting the fuel they need to function properly. Because the body’s cells are lacking the energy needed to carry on basic life functions, it signals the pancreas to secrete more Insulin to try and force the glucose into the cells. The presence of all that extra Insulin in the body brings more of the fatty acids out of food, which ends up getting stored in fat cells, causing weight gain. Trying to shed those pounds later on becomes more difficult as this cycle continues

PCOS also puts you at greater risk of other illnesses later in life inc diabetes.

Hope there's some handy info here for you.

Best of luck at your scan

Hi there! My name is kristy and im almost 21 (on sunday lol) and I got diagnoised when I was 19.
Don't be scared. Some women conceive naturally and some need a little push. Like me, I don't ovulate and I have insulin resistance. Right now im trying soy. Its a natural alternative to clomid.
All women are different!! My advice is to work out, (if overweight losing 5% of your total weight loss can make you ovulate on your own!) start taking prenatal vitamins, and just try try and try again. I wish you all the luck! And message me anyyyyyyy time! :)

Hi all i hope you dont nimd me replying, i had a miscarriage nearly 2 years ago, and had a scan to reveal i have pcos, i stopped trying for a baby for a year and i am now 19 weeks pregnant, i ahd no hope at all but i go to show it is possible for people with pcos can concieve, i never took tablets (my choice) and i think the break of not trying made it happen, im here if anyone needs to talk but i wanted to post to tell you like me it will happen just dont rush xxxxx
