Jacob is 10lbs 3oz and will be 2 days old at 5.54pm tonight..and having about 45-50ml of formula around 3-4hrs apart, struggles to drink it, then doesnt wind properly then is sick..so i though maybe we were giving him too much but the carton says a 7.5lb new born should be having 90mls at birth and at 2mths (11lbs) should be on 180mls..so am i starving him?
I think maybe he doesnt like the milk/bottles/teats but dont know which to change..we havent slept last night (ive had 5hrs since Tues night gah) an now think im doing it wrong :os Help?

Hi hun,

First off congratulations xxx

The 'guide' on the tin/carton is really rough and should be taken with a pinch of salt.

My LO was 9lb 6oz and for the first 3 days or so would only take 1oz at a time. At birth their tummies are the size of thimbles and have to expand naturally. I would just continue to feed him as much as he will comfortably take, at at least 4 hourly intervals and see how he gets on.

Within 10 days of birth Earl was taking 3oz at a time every 3-4 hours so try not to worry.

Enjoy your LO and if your still worried give your MW a call and she will re-assure you and give you advice.

Yeh dont worry :)

At only 2 days old your lo is just getting used to the world and stuff. Their stomachs are tiny, i remember talking to my hv about how skye wasnt eating hardly at all i.e 3 oz every 3 hrs .. and she said it wasnt a problem at all, the stomache neeeds to grow.

My lo would only take an oz here and there, we just fed her when she made sucking motions, we did this for 2 weeks before she started taking 2/3 oz every 3 hrs.

Even now she takes alot less than the ''reccomended'' guidelines.

Well the MW came round and said that she wants him to be taking 50ml every 4-6 hours so i have actually been over feeding him by making have 50ml every 3hrs.. first learning curve i guess lol

It's normal & will change. My Lo was only taking 30 ml per feed every 2-3 hrs, then at week 2 changed to 60 ml per feed. Until now he only takes 120 - 150 ml per feed every 5-6 hrs although it's mentioned that he should be taking 180 ml, 5 times per day.

My LO was a greedy boy from birth lol - but my cousins LO is 2 weeks old today and has just started to drink 4 ounces every four hours.

Up until yesterday he was bitting and bobbing about drinking 1/2 oz's every 4/5 hours.

I think it just takes some babies a while to adjust & decide how much food they want! x

it seems to have solved itself now..we are on 80ml every 5ish hrs now, seem to be adding 10ml a day at the moment to feeds! x
