So this morning I noticed my four day old had some sleep in the one corner of his eye, and didn't thibn anything of it, and was planning to dab him down today with warm wet cotton wool any way, as they recommend not to fully bathe them yet.
So I did, I started with that eye to make sure it was clean, I didn't go too close etc or rub etc but I then noticed his top eyelid was a little red, and he's very handsy so I assumed he scratched it in his sleep. His eyes open, move around and doesn't appear to be scratched or red. Only his eyelid.

But after a sleep in the afternoon he had more gooey sleep in his eye, but it became a lot, so now I'm worried it's gonna get infected. I did clean it once again because my mom just said make sure it stays clean. And it just looks horrible :( I'm sure it's not anything super bad as it's the eyelid and not the eye he scratched but it still makes me feel bad! The skin around it now looks dry, and compared to how it looked this morning it just looks so bad ;(

Has anyone else had their newborns do this and apart from keeping it clean what else can I do?!

My midwife is round tomorrow but I don't know whether to call the doctors instead??

Don't stress love. My son used to try and pull his cheeks off (at least that's what it looked like) He was always scratching his face. Just keep doing what your doing xox If you are really worried then get some Curash cream and put that on them. That's what I did and it helped heaps. Curash is amazing for any scratches, grazes, minor sunburn, skin irratations and nappy rash :)

As for the gooey eye, could just be a blocked tear duct which clears up on its own after a month or two. Sounds odd but you can try rubbing some breastmilk over his eye as the antibodies can help with healing and can prevent infection. I wouldn't feel too bad about the scratch. My baby's skin always heals very quickly and yes she has scratched herself a few times. For the most part the scratch was usually gone the next morning. I'm sure his eyelid will heal very soon!

The gooey eye is really common in newborns as PP said. My HV advised cooled boiled water of a bit of cotton wool to clean it several times a day

If it breastfeeding, breastmilk is GREAT for healing scratches! My lo scratches himself quite a lot even tho I file his nails smooth haha.

Sudecream is also good, the care an protect one is thinner and runs in better

My DD had a goopy eye, just wipe from inner eye to outer eye with cooled boiled water and don't re-use the same bit twice.

Both mine have given themselves bad scratches, I never did anything, just left them, they soon scabbed/healed :)
