My newborn is about 5 days old, and he hardly cries. He whines a bit when he is hungry, or sometimes cries when changing his diaper, but otherwise he is quiet and content- will it last?

My first was in NICU the first couple weeks, so I don't really remember if he was super fussy early on- but he also had a milk protein allergy and fought breastfeeding because of bottle feeding in NICU. When we brought him home I remember him crying quite a bit.

Did your quiet newborn stay that way (aside from normal issues like teething) or did they turn into more of a fusser?

my LO has been pretty chill. He has his fussy periods like during a growth spurt or wonder week when he wants constant holding, but it's never been an issue with us to solve what he is crying for.

Maybe that will be true with your LO, he will definitely cry louder though even if he stays relatively mild mannered

ETA: congrats on your new baby :)

Thanks! Yes he definitely has a set of lungs on him! The first day or so when we were in the hospital, he cried a lot and loudly, but we were also trying to establish breastfeeding along with him getting poked and prodded regularly. I remember telling my husband he just seemed miserable. Since coming home though he is pretty content so fingers crossed!!

For the first two weeks the only time my DD would cried was when she got a bath, otherwise we literally didn't hear a peep out of her. Then from about 3-6 weeks she went through a stage of hysterically crying every night from 8-10 pm. Since that stopped she only really cries for a reason - she is hungry, has a dirty diaper, etc. Once you fix whatever it is that is bothering her she stops crying, she doesn't really ever cry for no discernible reason.

My 3 babies who were not fussy newborns stayed that way. My 3rd son was a fussy baby, and stayed fussy.

My 6.5 week old is like this too, except we haven't had crying when it's bath time. He quite enjoys that. Last night was first in a while where we haven't had the evening crying so hoping its a phase that's passed, fingers crossed.

Definitely for the first few weeks, my daughter mostly just slept all the time unless she was awake for a feed, so as long as you are pretty quick in responding to hunger cues there probably won't be much crying or fussing early on. But yes, definitely changed later, though she was generally a pretty calm and relaxed baby (and now toddler). Crying is how they communicate, so all babies will do it, though some obviously do it less if you are responding to their needs fairly urgently.

My LO has always been quite a chilled baby, well she was until she had colic (understandably) but now she's getting bigger she's definitely getting a mind of her own and has developed a right little temper  she's pretty calm until something annoys her then it's like the world is ending, full on amateur dramatics- she's 3 months!

Hope yours stays chilled though!

Thanks ladies! I remember my first doing that purple crying thing for no reason from like 5-8 every night for a while. Was hoping I would just get lucky and miss that with this one hahaha.

I had a chilled baby. People kept saying you wait she will change. But months passed and she remained happy and rarely cried. Ate well, slept well apart from six weeks. She has never gone through a clingy stage. Shes now 15 months and cries more now as her attitude is growing lol!!

So your little one may well stay this way :-)

Lol Zodi is dramatic like Char said about her daughter, he will do the purple crying during a diaper change if you disturb him when he's sleeping

Sophie was a chilled out baby and is still very chilled out. She's never had the terrible twos, never played up in public and just generally been a dream to parent.

Mine were both quite sleepy babies for a few weeks and then I knew about it! :haha: My second isn't as hard as my first was though :)

Congratulations on your LO

My son was born and I didn't hear a peep from him not a single cry until he was 5 days old - he was a very chilled out easy going baby, even teething he didn't make a fuss (I realise this now I have my daughter) - Terrible twos well that is a whole different story

My daughter is completely different she was born crying and she is a lot more fussy although at the same time so much more of a smiley baby - she will let you know tho when she isn't happy

TBH I was totally shocked at how different 2 babies could be

My youngest was very content, never even cried at birth until an injection an hour later. Was the same all the way through newborn stage until now (one next week). Everyone comments on how happy and content he is

Same with my baby...he's 2 months now and still hardly ever cries. He'll fuss a little but it never develops into a cry really. Just a pretty happy guy overall.

My 1st was quite chilled and stayed that way. My 2nd was no (at all. Not ever) and has stayed the same; big time high maintenance. My 3rd was very chilled and happy as a little baby and is still pretty happy and chilled (8 months) :)

Thanks ladies.

He has definitely gotten a bit more fussy the last couple days. Not to the extent that my son was, but more random unexplained crying fits and whatnot.

My son was such a quiet and happy newborn! Sadly it didn't last. He is 13 months old now and still quite fussy. I hope he grows out of it soon!

My daughter and eldest son were quite happy babies, never really moaned or cried unless hungry or wet nappy, my 11 month old was a whole different story....
my youngest Ryan cried for the first 3 months of his life morning, noon and night. it was a nightmare so much so that he was admitted into hospital because we didn't know what was wrong with him.
He is now the happiest most pleasant little man ever :)
He sleeps all night and never really cries much just moans when he is tired...
