Hello everyone. My name is Carmen and I'm 16 weeks pregnant and having braxton hicks contractions daily. I was prescribed nifedipine, but I was just wondering has anyone ever started on nifedipine at 16 weeks for braxton hicks contractions? Thanks in advance.

I have been taking it since 12th week after my cervical stitch... Now I am hearing that it is not very safe during pregnancy... Anyone else prescribed?

It's a very popular drug used to control blood pressure in pregnancy. I took it for some weeks before I had an allergic reaction to it but my baby was fine throughout. Good luck with it all! X

Thanks mahas and kellogs for responding. I've never heard of it not being safe, but it does worry me to start this soon. Mahas, how far along are you now and are you still taking it?

Yes Carmen.... I'm almost at 17 weeks and have been taking it since 12th week when I had the cervical stitch put in place... I asked my dr again and she scoffed at it not being safe... After all she is an infertility specialist so I want to put my mind at ease!!! What about you?

I had my cerclage put in at 13 weeks and I'm 17 weeks today. I started getting uterine tightenings after so my doctor told me to take the nifedipine as needed. She also told me that it's safe to take. Mahas, were you experiencing any contractions or were you placed on it as a precaution?

I've had it for most of my pregnancy combined with labetalol for blood pressure problems and even took it a while after giving birth.
My son was absolutely fine and born at 8lbs 8oz and 57.5cm and no problems at all. X
