Well. I hope this is the right place to post this.

First off. I'm not pregnant yet. still TTC.

But I have a nipple piercing and have a few concerns about it. When should I take it out?

What if it doesn't close up, is there any concern with that?

What about after baby is done feeding and onto solids. is there any lasting effects from nursing after having a piercing?

Is it fully healed?

No problems at all. I took mine out after my c-section (it was an EMCS, they may have asked me to take them out if they knew they were there) before the first time I hand expressed, never put them back in.

Since it is healed, there is no concern about not closing. Healed piercings just get smaller and smaller until the jewelry won't go through. It's not an open wound if it is healed, the skin tube is fully healed.

Some say the milk comes out more of the holes, I have not had any noticeable difference.

I can't answer the last one since I'm not there yet!

I removed my nipple piercings when I was pregnant with my 1st in early pregnancy, it healed very quickly, I never established breast feeding him but when I did breastfeed my dd 3 years ago I had sore/ cracked nipples, I'm not sure if this was related though, could be one of those things.

Mine were both peirced. One side still has the hole through and the other side is scarred from tearing out the piercing accidentally. No problems breast feeding whatsoever, even from the scarred side. :flower:

Hi. I've never had a nipple piercing, however, I did complete a 20 hour bf'ing class which did touch briefly on piercing.(but I'm definitely not an expert) Pierced nipples are safe to feed baby with although jewelry should definitely be removed as its unsanitary and a choking hazard. It seems that other posters have had mixed experiences. Unfortunately the fact is is that there are milk ducts in your breast that have been damaged by your piercing, that won't produce milk which may affect your supply. That being said if you are careful to get an effective latch so baby is draining the milk you do have and can create supply on demand or happen to be a lucky mommy that has ample amounts of ducts you could very well not have an issue. If you do have an issue consider using what you do have an only supplementing the bare minimum, ideally with donor breastmilk.

I've had them for a couple of years now.

I guess one concern is When to take them out? and will the holes expand because of BF'ing?

Thank you for your reply.

I believe I read that cracking can happen. do you think it's more likely to happen because of the piercings?

Did the class have any examples or testimonies about it?

I have my nipple done and was concerned about this. I left my piercing in the whole pregnancy and only took it out while in labour. I'm breast feeding and had no problems as far as supply. I call it my turbo nipple as milk comes out of the holes as well as the top. I had no extra soreness or cracking on pierced side. The only difference I've found is the extra holes. I've left It out now although some people replace it after each feeding. Hope this helps

I took them out right before I started pumping/expressing/breastfeeding.

I did have to get longer barbells halfway through because my expanding areola was eating my jewelry...

So you don't put them back in anymore? You were though at one point?

I'm curious if the feeding can lead of the holes getting bigger

I should have read this post before I replied to your other one.

So the feeding will expand the holes. :dohh:

No, pregnancy expanded the tissue the jewelry ran through, LENGTHENING the skin tubes. The holes were still 14ga, the didn't necessarily get bigger. I had to change jewelry halfway through my PREGNANCY, should have specified.

I would say the holes have SHRUNKEN to the point I would not try and get the jewelry in now that I am breastfeeding.
