They are not really recommended unless you are having problems. Why do you think you need them??

I have had to use them because my LO will not latch on without (even though the MW says I have nothing wrong with my nipples which should be perfect for breastfeeding).

The MW have warned me that they may reduce the amount of milk i produce 20-30%.

I think as long as he is getting my breastmilk some how or other then it is better using these than his not getting any at all.

They are also supposed to protect your nipple from abrasion.

Thanks, he has a hard time latching on it seems. I have larger breasts and wondered if one might make it somehow easier.
