I think Aisling has just had a bad dream  She sounded v. distressed on the monitor but was asleep when I went up, then woke up and still seemed really distressed. My immediate reaction was to bf her to give her some comfort and she's now gone back to sleep again :D I'm just wondering though, is it ok for bfing to be my first port of call when providing comfort. Just wondering if I should start with cuddles etc or is this just one of the many benefits of bfing?

I bf my premature son (who is now 5 months corrected in age) on a prepumped breast (because he cannot eat orally safely) for comfort alone (well and to keep my supply going while I have pumped over the last nine months). The occupational therapist says this is perfectly ok, as it is also ok to do it to get him to sleep.

If a professional tells me its ok...I tend to believe them.

But others may not agree.

Bad dreams are awful. My son has them..I always wonder if they are about his 4 months in the hospital..and all the pricks, pokes and pain he endured to live. =(

My midwife told me not to let him 'use me as a dummy' but I think that was for my sanity rather than anything else.

I don't know if its recommended or not, but when Olivia is upset for whatever reason, it just feels the most natural thing to do. I know not to start the 'mummy is a dummy' thing, but if my instincts are telling me to nurse her, then at the moment thats what I'm going to do :hugs:

i'm the same, if joshua is upset nursing is generally the only thing to soothe him. Just feels right so i'm going to carry on.

I use it for comfort. She's teething and had a restless night and if I get her in bed with me and give her mimi she'll calm down and we all get some peace :)

If you are happy with it, then I don't see any problem with it. I nurse LO whenever he wants, and he is a happy and calm baby as a result. I don't think you can overdo comfort. It isn't a want for them I don't think, it is a need.
