Hi Ladies

My OH got his SA results back today and was told it was normal apart from only having 2% good sperm. She says 15% is the norm.

Is 2% really bad?! What does this mean??!

Hw had his SA done a year ago and everything was ok then.

Doctor says the decrease can be because of over heating the area - laptop, mobile phone, cat sitting on lap, tight pants...all the usual but she said he could also start taking multi vits and then get re-tested in 90 days!!!

Feel totally confused...I have had blood tests, scans, got HSG soon, I use a CBFM and we BD lots when I OV....but now I am thinking has it all been a waste which is probably really stupid to think that. Even worse OH feels gutted but I can't say any of this to him.

I have read other posts on here about OH having problems and maybe 2% isn't that bad and I'm just freaking out?!

:sad2:

Hun don't panic! Re-test in at least 3months, get a good multivitamin for your OH and perhaps antioxidants and tell him to avoid smoking, alcohol, hot showers, hot baths, cycling, laptops on lap, tight pants, driving long distances without a break etc.... DH has 2 kids from a previous relationship and now his first sample came back at 0% morphology, second at 2, then 4 and 5 in jan! It may have been just a bad sample! A common cold can affect the swimmers! Good luck to you hun!

Thanks Brumbar :flower:

I guess we just gotta keep trying! Poor DH was pretty upset about this though....we decided to go out for dinner tonight to take our minds off it, and the waiter randomly asked us how many children we have and the couple next to us were talking about finding out what sex their baby is.....has the world suddenly gone baby mad!?!?

Sorry to hear what you are going through too...good luck with your IVF xx

Brumbar is right. There is no need to panic. My DH had normal morphology but bad motility in his first test. Second time he had only 3% morphology and even worst motility but good count. He started taking vitamins and then we had another SA done recently and his morphology has increased to 11%. So don't worry SA results can be improved specially as you say his first one was normal. Healthy eating can be a huge help.

Thanks xx

DH is really quite down at the moment, but he has been out today getting multi vits and antioxidant tablets and I've been reading him back the comments on here so hopefully that is helping. It's a shame he has to wait 90 days before he can re-test though.

xx

Does he know what his total count was?

2% of 1million is more of a problem than if he has a high count of 40million for example.

HI chanel...that's a good point, he thinks the Doctor just said the count and motility was good...he doesn't remember any figures. We go together again to see FS in July so I may have to get more details then. x

To be honest the GP isn't very good at giving out the results, you get a much better picture from the FS... not to mention the fact that men don't really seem to get the facts when they are at the docs... they're in and out as fast as they can.

Very true - think it's still a bit of a taboo subject for men x

Hi Slinky,

Don't know if this helps but my DP had 2 really bad SA results in a row! Count was 0.5 million and only 40% of them were motile and even less were of good morphology. Our fertility Clinic suggested an antioxidant supplemet regime which he followed. He also did everything Brumbar has mentioned as well really! Sperm formulation takes almost 3 months so it will be 2-3 months before you start reaping the benefits of any lifestyle changes/ vitamin suppliments etc. My point is, by the time we had EC on 09th Feb his sperm count had shot up to 80 million and 50% were motile and morphology was 60%. My DP was very down about his results at first, but I completely agree with Chanel, his GP was rubbish. He basically gave him a print out of the results to take home! We googled it to try and figure it out for ourself but it was too confusing so I took the results to my GP who was much better!
chins up and stay positive. Keep us posted!

Thanks Chesca x

I think I'm going to get DH to call FS to get full info on his results as his memory is a bit sketchy on what they told him...not surprising really, I think we both thought it would be fine because it was ok 1 year ago. You really realise that you can't take anything for granted when ttc!

x

Hey Slinky, Just wanted to add my two cents worth - in the same position as you but with low motility and morphology at OH first SA. The GP took one look and said it was fine so OH didn't bother to look at it and just told me everything was fine. A week or so later I checked the printout for myself and was pretty p**sed off to find the heading said 'sub-fertility' and the results were way below normal. Now we're waiting for our first Fertility appointment with another SA in June. Fingers crossed all the vitimins (Wellman Conception) and bowls of nuts and seeds I'm feeding him will have an effect! Everything people have suggested sound good to me - hard not to be a crazy woman about it all but hopefully it's all worth while and a BFP arrives in the next few months :)

Good luck, it would be great to hear how you get on.

Hi Slinky, :happydance:

My DP was never good when it comes to remembering things the Doctors have said..... I swear he was just sat in there thinking he wants to get out and not really listening to what they're saying! lol! He's got loads better since we've been going through IVF - he remembers more than me sometimes!

That's very true hunny!

Keep us posted,

I'm in the same boat as you girls too, dh got his first SA results last week and his motility is low. Gp says I need to get all my investigations done before he will refer us to FS, really frustrated by this as I just want to get the ball rolling to move things forward. I am going to book another appointment with a different doc to see if they will do the referral asap. Lochbride- I'm exactly the same as you have got my dh on Wellman Conception and eating brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds! Re hope it makes a difference. I'm also asking him how his balls are every 5 mins making him keep everything cool down there! TTC is such a roolercoaster but it will be worth it when we all get our BFPs!!!!!

Hee hee, I do the same with my DH - if I see anything remotely warm near his crown jewels I'm straight on it!!!

Do you mind me asking how long you have been ttc? I had to have blood tests and scan done before I got referred. I hope they refer you soon...waiting is soooo frustrating.

xx

We've been trying just over a year, so not that long in comparison to others on here but I wish I could just get on with sorting it out! I have had bloods done and am having the scan in 3 weeks time. Were you waiting long when you were referred to see a FS, that is was there a long waiting list before you were seen? Re hope all your hard work pays off soon and you get that bfp!
xx

A year is long enough though...esp when people around us seem to fall quite easily..my best friend fell PG on 1st attempt last year!!

When my GP referred me my local hospital had a 70 day waiting list so she checked out all the other hospitals near by for me and the best was a 30 day wait which was pretty good. Maybe your GP will be able to do the same for you.

Keep us posted xx

I had my DH taking geritol complete and a B complex at the time of his SA and his morphology was 30% which they said was good, so I believe vitamins can help morphology . our problem was the motility was low. and the count was low. so I now have him taking bee pollen which I read can really help. my DH's SA was a year ago. im trying to talk him into getting another done. hoping things are better.

Bee pollen? Never heard of that before...I am learning so many new things on BNB!! I might go shopping this weekend and stock up on some of the things I have heard mentioned on here..my poor DH will be taking so many supplements soon - anything to improve those swimmers!!

Definitely worth getting your DH to get tested again...my DH's result changed within a year :sad2:

Good luck xx

Slinky - I feel your pain my cousin told me last week that she's pregnant again ( she has an 18month old) she fell pregnant this time while on the pill and says she only had sex with her dh twice in the past three months! Why or why is it so easy for some yet so damned hard for us! :-(
