We got our SA results a week ago, but I'm confused as to what they should be. Everything seems to conflict online!

The basic results were as follows:

Count- 36.75m (14.33 motile)
Motility - 39%
Morphology- 10%
Volume 3.5ml

From what I can gather, this is low on all levels, but not terribly low, right?

Sooo confused, can anyone help? What is the benchmark for a perfect SA?

Do you think I could get a FS referral based on this?

Hi dan-o,

You're right it is very conflicting. The WHO has recently changed it's guidelines regarding this. Have a look at this blog which summarises it:
https://infertilityblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/sperm-morphology-new-guidelines.html

We saw our FS for the first time yesterday and while I'm sure each hospital will have it's own guidelines for what it classifies as 'normal' this is what ours said they like to see:

Count: he said our count was fine (72m/ml) but have read that 20million per ml and over is desirable.
Motility: 50% and over
Morphology: 5% and over normal forms

I was very surpised by the morph, as I had thought it needed to be more like 15% normal forms and over, but this is in line with the new WHO guidelines.

He said that antioxidant supplements can help with motility and lifestyle changes could help with count and morph, eg: less than 5 units of alcohol a week, no smoking etc.

If your count is per ml, than it looks ok as does the morph, motility looks a bit low though.

Good luck!

Thanks tomo, that's really helpful.

We were hoping to get a FS referral, as we have been trying two years, but we need something to be referred for.

Maybe I can pull up my GP on the motility then :)
