My partner had a sperm analysis last year, i got the results and took them to my GP. He said everything seemed fine, but when i went to my gynae he wanted to repeat them. His appointment to have it done again isnt till march. Anyway these are his results, exactly how they are shown:

Semen viscosity:Normal
Semen volume(492):Below Range-1.5ml
Semen PH level:7.4PH
Semen apperance:cloudy white
Sperm forward progression:73%
Sperm concentration(4936): 960.0 10*6/ml
Sperm count(498):1,440.0 10^6/ml
Density of morphologically normal and motile sperm(49c): 14.0%

To be honest with you, I dotn have a clue what any of this means, whether its good or bad. I know the volume is below range but he missed the pot a bit! lol and also it took us an hour to get the semen to the hospital so that will affect it a bit. Does anyone else have their other halfs results that we could compare  Ive tried googling it but they dont show the "average" results in the same way that I have them. Someone please help :flower:

Hey bumpy - wow they don't make it easy for us to understand do they!!

These are the 'defined normal' parameters..

VOLUME >2.0 ML
pH 7.2-7.8
CONCENTRATION >20x106/ML
MOTILITY >50%
MORPHOLOGY >30% WITH NORMAL MORPHOLOGY
WBC < 1x106/ML (white blood cells)

It looks to me like they have listed his count as 1,440? Is this what they said to your hubby?x

they didnt explain it, the Gp had a look on the internet and i dont think he understood them too!! for the sperm count it just says:

Total sperm count(498):1,440.0 10^6/ml (40-1000)

It does also say above average.

So im not sure what his count is :S as i thought 1440 was quite low but then it says above average! what do u reckon?

Thankyou Soooooooooo much for replying! :) xx

Don't worry hun - these results are soooooooo confusing!!

I know that they say 20 million per ml of sperm is 'average' in accordance with WHO guidelines.

On my DH's he had 1 written down  and that meant he only had 1 million - later on he got 8 million?? So i'm not sure - if they have said that the count is above average and then there is the second figure in brackets i reckon he had 40 million per ml which is deffo above average?

It's always good to do a repeat SA as sperm mature every 70-90 days so you can get a more accurate reading rather than repeating during a 3 month window.

FX you don't need that repeat visit - sorry to see you had a mc :hugs:

Hi Bumpyboo,

I think you seen my reply to another lady regarding SA which i found quite easy to translate for her but the print out you have given has me a bit confused.

Semen volume(492):Below Range-1.5ml - the volume should be greater than 2ml but what is the value in the brackets ?

Sperm count(498):1,440.0 10^6/ml - I'm not sure what the sperm count actually is here is it 1,440.0 * 10^6 ? which would equal 1,440,000,000 which can't be right i dont think - I mean my calculation can't be right

Density of morphologically normal and motile sperm(49c): 14.0% This is a really good morphology, I know they say it should be greater than 14% but having higher value than that from what i have seen is few and far between

Maybe i'm just being a bit dumb here though... wouldn't be the first time.
Can you not get in touch with the andrology unit that done the test and have them explain the numbers, thats what i would try and do just because i'm soooo impatient?

I think the important ones are count, volume and morphology.

Just found this which might help if someone can explain the numbers you have in your DHs results

The World Health Organisation provides a definition of a 'normal' sperm count:

the concentration of spermatozoa should be at least 20 million per ml.
the total volume of semen should be at least 2ml.
the total number of spermatozoa in the ejaculate should be at least 40 million.
at least 75 per cent of the spermatozoa should be alive (it is normal for up to 25 per cent to be dead).
at least 30 per cent of the spermatozoa should be of normal shape and form.
at least 25 per cent of the spermatozoa should be swimming with rapid forward movement.
at least 50 per cent of the spermatozoa should be swimming forward, even if only sluggishly.

PS It is very normal for men to have them repeated regardless of previous tests so don't worry that there must be something wrong if he has to have them repeated.

good luckx

Confusing isnt the word!!!lol when he goes for the next SA Im going to take these results and ask them to explain. Thankyou ever so much! and Good luck with the IVF :hugs: xxx

Thanks for the quick reply :) I have no idea what it means, ive just posted them on here exactly how they are worded on the piece of paper i have! Good idea to call them, i think i might have to tomorow!! Thanks again xx

The thing is that at my clinic they consider anything over 2% morphology as nothing to worry about so each clinic i think has there own analysing techniques and thoughts on what is normal and what is not so i would definitely give them a call.

Here's a good chart at the bottom of this site to help you with reference ranges and info for each of those results! https://health.yahoo.com/reproductive-diagnosis/semen-analysis/healthwise--hw5612.html

My DH is doing his analysis tomorrow, but we gotta collect it at home.
The office told us not to do it by sex or lube...He wants me to help... I know this is too much info, but what's a good way to get the job done? Can saliva be used? (Again, sorry, TMI.)
