Once babies born do you have to deliver your own placenta? I liked the whole getting the injection in my leg last time but can't see how they can possibly do that in a water birth. I have my heart set on a water birth but the thought of delivering my placenta freaks me out.

Many people get out of the water and onto their beds to deliver the placenta. The midwife does all that and takes care of it so you don't have to worry. If they think you need help..they can give you a pitocin injection to help you with the 3rd stage.

Ah good to know thanks, I like the injection I was completely oblivious to the midwife sorting out the placenta last time and I'd like it to be the same this time aswell I was just worried incase they made you stay in the water and you have to deliver it yourself if that makes sense lol

Hi I thought I'd comment as I had a waterbirth last year, like yourself i wanted the injection so they helped me out of the birthing pool and onto a bed to deliver the placenta

I got out of the water to deliver the placenta on a mat on the floor. The midwife was asking me to push when I got a contraction but I didn't feel anything as my uterus was exhausted so I had the injection too.

Ive had two water births. My first was in the hospital. They made me get out and lay on the bed (after the baby was born). The placenta took a while and i had lost the max amount of blood so i got the injection at that point.

My second was a HB. I birthed the baby and then i got out and laid on the bed to birth the placenta again. I didn't want the injection if it wasn't necessary. My placenta came out in 7 minutes after the baby was born (no major bleeding, it was actually very minimual). If i would have needed (or wanted) the injection, they would have just done it once i was laying on the bed and awaiting the placenta.

The majority (though not all) care providers have a water birthing mom birth the placenta on "land". This is due to several reasons, but the biggest is so that they can monitor blood loss as it's quite the challenge when water is invovled. So they know if they need to give the injection (or in the case of you wanting the injection, give it to you then as i cant imagine how an injection would work in the water)

I had a water birth and got out to deliver the placenta. I didn't have the injection, but barely noticed the placenta arriving. I was reclined on the settee cuddling my baby and the midwife suggested I cough. I did, and out it came.

I had a water birth last week, I stayed in the pool but she drained the water and I had the injection and placenta came quite quickly

Hi, I had a water birth on Wednesday. I got out of the pool and onto the bed, the midwife gave me the injection and then delivered my placenta for me :)
