Ok now I'm confused... Can some one please give me an idiot guide to formula feeding?

I'm confused...

For night time feeds do you

A - Boil the water, add the powder, cool the mixture and then reheat during the night?

or

B - Boil the water, leave it to cool, put it in the fridge and then add the powder when you get up in the night and then reheat?

Also is important to cool it quickly once you have boiled it or should you leave it to cool to room temperature and then put it in the fridge.

I don't know what the official rule is but we boil the kettle, leave it to cool half an hour (ideally), make up the mixture and put it in the fridge and then reheat as required.

I think the correct way is to add the powder when the water is the right temperature and feed straight away but I don't see how that's do-able at night.

Ok

The Official way is the method on the tin. Boil Kettle, leave for half an hour, fill bottle, add powder, cool to body temperature, feed immediately, eat within 1 hour.

The way I do it is to Boil Kettle, leave for a couple of minutes, fill bottles (usually 4 at a time), add powder, cool in sink for 10 minutes, put in fridge until needed.

The way a lot of people do it (and what I do at night time) is Boil Kettle, leave for a couple of minutes, fill bottles, leave to cool on the side or cool and put in the fridge (as it's water it doesn't matter), add powder and reheat to correct temperature (or heat then add powder).

The 'proper' way, is the top way. However, either of the ways below are popular and convenient ways to do it and were recognised as methods u to a few years ago when there was a study done whihc found that the powder, as it's not sterile, could harbour nasties which could make LO seriously ill. However, these are incredibly rare. It depends ow comfortable you are with risking this, and how organised you are, and what works best for you.

(Did you get the 'Bottle Feeding' leaflet from your HV? That explains the 'correct way' and the pre-making method is suggested for when you go out and about.)

Hope this helps hun...but above all, just do what you are comfortable with.

For night feeds I take a bottle with cold boiled water and a tomme tippie tub with the correct amount of powder in it to my bedroom. I then just add the powder when required - Olivia is quite happy to have milk at room temp. HV said ok to do it this way.

I'm not saying this is the right way but here's what I do:

Boil the water, leave it to cool, add the powder whilst bottle at room temp and feed. I never put them in the fridge and don't need to heat them as she is quite happy to take at room temp.

As the above said, I think you are supposed to add the powder when the water is 70 degrees but I don't know of anyone that does that. I think it'd drive me demented!

We make up 4 bottles at a time with the kettle thats beween boiled and then left for at least 30 mins and pop them in the fridge. Reheat as needed...we're lucky Dewi doesnt want them at blood temp but just the chill taken off..we put hot water form the tap in a pint glass pop in the bottle for a few mins and then feed.

Damn TT closer to nature bottles are too dumpy to heat in a jug...they tip over lol!

Option A, your supposed to put the powder in the hot water to kill any germs as its not sterile.

we make up the bottles of water and leave on the side until we need them then heat the water and add the powder, probably not the "correct" way of doing it but ive done it that way with 3 kids now and they have never been ill from it so not gonna change it now!

oh and all my kids have only liked hot bottles! it takes their breath away if its cold

at night i fill up 3bottles with water and formula and put in fridge and heat when needed x

This is the way we used to do it:

Boil the kettle and add the water to the bottles. Leave on the side to cool and add the powder when needed. Phoebe took her bottle at room temp so we didn't need to cool or heat up feeds.

At night we took up 5oz of cooled boiled water in the bottles and then had hot water in a flask, we she needed a feed we added 2oz of boiling water to the bottles and added the powder. This was the way our HV told us to do it, it seems they all tell us different things.

We had no problems with Phoebe doing it this way.

I add water to the bottles then add milk powder and heat as needed, although she will take a room temp feed. I also have 3 kids and if I had to do it the 'correct' way for each bottle I would be insane!!!

None of mine have been ill from the bottles and I've always done it ths way. ut you have to do whats right for you and also what is best for baby!

it seems im the only one that boils the kettle half hr before bed time.. put the water in a flask where it will stay at that temp for like 10 hrs or something like that, then during the night put the water in a bottle add the powder then cool in a bowl of cold water. only takes 5 mins or so. I get soo worried after the mw said to do it this way or my LO could get a tummy bug.

I am however the only one of my friends to do this, they all do it either option A or option B way and their kids are fine.. Oh and my rents done option A for me and im also fine. Lol. but now im in the habbit of using the flask, its quick and easy for me personaly. Right ima stop writing now as im rambling

I boil the kettle whilst washing and sterilising the bottles in the microwave. Once sterilised I add the boiling water (2oz less than what she takes) and leave out on the side.

During the day I will boil the kettle, add the extra 2oz to the room temp bottles then add powder.

During the night I boil kettle and fill a flask. I take the flask, room temp bottles and tin of formula to bed with me. When Chloe wakes I just top up the bottle with water from the flask and add powder.

Job done!!

I make bottles using boiling water, cool in some cold water for 15 mins then pop in fridge and heat in warm water when needed.

we use a flusk to keep the pre-boiled warm water. This way we have clean warm water day & night :) and we always prepare fresh bottles for our LO. It is much easier than warming cold bottles at the middle of night.

We use a flask in the day and at night. Boil the kettle and leave to cool for 30 mins then fill the flask. When you need to make a feed, add the hot water and powder to a bottle and cool in a jug of cold water for a few mins x

Half fill bottles with boiled water cool thm down stick in fridge... get up in night boil kettle and top it to required amoun then add power x
