I was being induced at 37+3 due to obstetric cholestasis and severe SPD

Thursday 18th April

9.30am – My friend arrived to pick us up and we took Thomas to nursery before heading to the hospital.

11am – I was given the first round of prostin and told that my cervix was long, hard and not open at all and also monitored. After an hour I was allowed to do what I liked so me and my friend headed off to Toby Carvery for lunch

2pm – I got back to the hospital. I had been having mild cramps, more like BH’s whilst we were out for lunch so I went and got some pain relief to chill out for the afternoon. I got my cross stitching out and got some of that done.

5.30pm – Hubby arrived from work and we had a catch up before my friend brought the kiddies in.

6pm – My friend came with the kiddies and we had a catch up. The MW then came to check and see how I was progressing. She said I was 1cm and my cervix had thinned out a little but not a lot so she gave me another prostin. I was then monitored for a while again before hubby and the kids left.

7.15pm – My friend and I went for a walk to try and get things moving. We walked down 6 flights of stairs then out of the main entrance of the hospital and into the gardens. All the time when walking I had BH’s and the pressure in my cervix was unreal … I told my friend I was sure he was going to drop out :haha:

7.50pm – She left and I went back to the ward. I had a chat with the lady next to me and the MW was doing her rounds. The pains were coming every 2-3 minutes but again I just thought they were Braxton hicks as they were manageable.

8.30pm – I decided to try and watch something on my phone. I could not get comfortable at all. In the end I ended up reading my magazine and being on the bed on all fours and rocking slightly when I had a pain.

9.30pm – I went to the nurses station to ask for some pain relief as I still hadn’t seen a MW. They told me my MW was in my room doing the rounds and to go ask her. I didn’t want to disturb her so I just waited till she came to me.

9.45pm – The MW came to see me. I was rocking through the pains when she came in. She asked how often I was getting them and I told her they were irregular, coming every 2-4 minutes and lasting 50 seconds to a minute. I asked her for a birthing ball to bounce on a some pain relief. She said she would get me a birthing ball and recommended I try a bath for the pain.

10pm – I went and had a bath but couldn’t stay in long as it didn’t help at all as I couldn’t seem to get my bump under the water properly :grr: I got out and got sorted for bed.

10.30pm – I went back to the ward and asked the MW for pain relief again, she gave me some codeine and paracetamol. She forgot to get the birthing ball but by this point I was just knackered and I wanted some sleep.

12pm – I was still awake with the pains but they didn’t seem to be getting any worse. I just laid in bed trying to sleep. I started to get really emotional at this point as I was so exhausted and just wanted to sleep. I called for the MW to get some more pain relief to help me sleep and I was crying when she came in. She examined me and said I was 2cm and that they would be able to break my waters tomorrow … silver lining and all that hey? She asked if I would like some pethedine as it would help me sleep so I agreed. I went to the toilet first as she said it would make me really drowsy and unbalanced. I got back into bed and she gave me the pethedine.

Friday 19th April

1am – I was awake again with the pains, again I didn’t think it was anything but Braxton hicks, I definitely didn’t think it could be labour

3am - I struggled on till 3am when I really could bare the pain no more. I called the MW again and burst out crying again  proper softie! Anyway she said had a feel of my tummy when I was having the pains and said she would do an internal and if I was 4cm she could send me to labour ward for my waters to be broken. I was still under the impression I wasn’t in labour and that I’d be stuck there in that pain all night. Anyway she checked me and said I was 5cm :happydance: I started crying again with the relief that something was actually happening :haha: The MW called for the HCA’s to come and help pack all my things and take them to labour ward. She asked if I wanted a wheelchair and I laughed at her and said no I’d be fine walking

3.30am – We headed down to the labour ward and on the walk down I had 2 contractions and had to stop and lean against the wall to get through the pain. Once we got to my room I went to the toilet, when I came out I got another pain and the MW from the ward felt my tummy again. She told me the day after I had Thomas that once she’d felt that pain she went to tell my new MW that I wouldn’t be long at all in delivering :haha:

3.40am – They phoned Chris and told him to come to the hospital. I was now in the room and desperate for some pain relief. They wanted to get me on to the ECG monitor … I’m not sure why … maybe coz I was induced  anyway I had to lie on the bed which was a mission in itself even with 2 MW’s helping me! Once on the bed and strapped to the monitor I was given the gas and air. Once I got into the swing of things it was brilliant

4am – I remember clock watching in between contractions and wondering where the heck Chris was. I sort of knew I was near but was still in denial  I remember seeing 4am, 4.05am, 4.10am and thinking where the hell is he!

4.15am – Chris finally came through the door! The MW started asking me about my waters and about possibly breaking them as I was bearing down with contractions. I told her that was fine and that I’d prefer them to be broken as they needed to be broken with Caitlin and Thomas and then everything went quickly after.

4.18am – The MW left to go and speak to another MW about breaking my waters or something she said.

4.20am – I told Chris I needed to go for a wee but I couldn’t I was having a contraction and was bearing down again and the next thing I know my waters were going. I told OH that I thought I was weeing  then I said maybe it’s my waters. He was going to go get the MW but I didn’t want him to leave me so I pressed the button. The MW came straight in and checked and said it was definitely my waters.

4.23am – We lost the trace on Noah so the MW said I needed to move from my side to my back to get his heart rate again, with the contractions and the SPD I was in so much pain it was awful! I couldn’t move and when I got a contraction I was bearing down still.

4.30am – I could feel his head starting to come down the birth canal and began pushing.

4.32am – Noah James Hughes was born in one fell swoop. He didn’t follow the normal birth protocol of head first, next contraction body … no he came out all at once  Chris said he had looked at the MW then up at me then back at the MW and Noah was there

Our beautiful baby boy was placed on my chest for a snuggle whilst daddy cut the cord and I had my injection. He was then weighed and was 6lb 12oz … not bad for 3 weeks early!

It’s a week on now and we’re still in shock at how quick it all went  whenever anyone mentions the birth Chris just says it was fast :haha:
Noah’s birth was hugely different to Thomas’ homebirth however I was VERY happy with Noah’s birth and don’t regret not being able to have my homebirth. I made the best of a bad situation and the MW’s before and during labour were amazing, I really could not fault them.

So there we have it …

Noah James Hughes, born at 4.32am on Friday 19th April, weighing 6lb 12oz after a 1hr 35minute labour :haha:
