I'm very pleased to announce the birth of my baby girl, Lily May Thompson! She was born on Wednesday 16th May (38 + 6) at 15:37, weighing 7lb14oz!
This is her at the hospital the morning after delivery:

So my birth story goes like this (apologies, this turned into an essay somehow!!!)...
On Tuesday 15th, I went to see my midwife as I had been experiencing watery discharge for a few days, which seemed to come in spits and spans - I was worried that my waters were going. She did an internal examination and said it wasn't my waters, all was fine. Then they hooked me up to a monitor afterwards to check that baby was still ok after being examined. I also asked her while I was there whether she thought I would be on time, late or early (OH and I had been thinking I was going to be early for about a week). She said she had a feeling I would go late, so I went home and started to prepare myself for a bit more waiting!
At about 2am on Wednesday morning, I woke up to some more of that watery discharge but this time enough to wet through my PJs and leave a wet patch on the sheets. I also had period type pain and backache (had backache all Tues eve which I'd put down to overdoing it in the kitchen on Tuesday morn!). I couldn't sleep so took a bath. This didn't seem to help so I phoned the hospital who asked me to go in for an examination. I was told my waters still hadn't gone but was 1cm dilated. My contractions were a little all over the place and was told I was in early labour but this might last days so to go home (this was 5:30am).
By 10am my pains were getting worse (my TENS machine wasn't enough for me) and I also had lost a blood clot so phoned the hospital again and was told to come in. I was again hooked up to a monitor which showed I was having about 2 contractions in every 10 minute period but was told they weren't very strong so I couldn't yet be in established labour but was sent to have some gas and air to help me and a vaginal examination could be done at 12pm. I was planning on having a water birth but unfortunately the midwifery led unit was closed so was sent upstairs to the labour ward.
On the labour ward we were pretty much left to it and I was beginning to panic as the pain was getting so intense that I was thinking my plan of just gas and air was completely out of the window and was ready to ask for an epidural! Finally, at 12:30pm I was ready to be examined but was warned that I'd probably just be sent home and again reminded this could go on for days! However, lo and bohold, when I was examined, I was FULLY dilated - that would be why I was in so much pain! Baby was also back to back.
Within minutes, OH was running down to the car to grab my hospital bag and I was leaning on all fours over the back of the bed (for hours I'd not been able to sit or lie down cos of the pressure, made worse by baby's position) using gas and air to help ease the pain. I began pushing at 1:15pm and was doing really well for the first 40 minutes or so. Then my contractions seemed to come less often and less intense. So it was decided that at 2:15, if things didn't improve, they'd give me Syntocinon to speed things up. Once this kicked in, I was back in 'the zone'! Baby was coming out wonky however, making things a little tricky so the midwife popped a finger in to move her and that seemed to do the trick as I began to find it slightly easier after this. This did give me an internal tear though (and shocked OH somewhat, who described blood squirting out everywhere!!!). Finally, at 3:37pm, my baby was born!!!
We'd been team yellow and I remember through my tears saying 'what is it, what is it?' to my OH, who was blubbing too much to respond himself so the midwife announced we had a baby girl! Luckily we'd decided on a girls name ages ago... Lily May (May as a middle name).
I was then given an injection to deliver my placenta and breast fed Lily. However, my placenta was well and truely stuck so I went in to theatre to have it manually removed and an internal tear stitched up. Lily was left for cuddles with daddy. By 6:30pm I was on the post natal ward with Lily and my OH again feeling on cloud 9 - in fact still there now.
Since the birth, things have been going well - Lily is breast feeding well, but it is extremely painful for me because she is actually tongue tied (midwife picked up on this today). On Monday we go to get that snipped. The last two nights OH and I haven't had much sleep cos Lily wouldn't sleep unless she was being cuddled by one of us. Last night we took it in turns to sleep, which worked quite well but I am feeling hopeful cos today she has had two sleeps in her moses basket! Wish me luck for tonight...
