Just a quick question - can you overfeed on breast feeding? Leo feeds every 2/3 hours and sometimes it seems like we are feeding on and off for hours - he grizzles on boob and then i switch boob and wind and he is ok for a bit. He is defo hungry because he puts his hand in his mouth and moves his head side to side im not forcing him to feed! Sometimes he cries when I put him back on boob - maybe he doesnt like my boobs! :rofl:Anyone else got experience of this maybe I am over feeding him!?

No you can't overfeed. Its amazing, if a baby feeds loads, your milk is adapted by containing less calories. If a baby doesn't feed much, your milk contains more cals to compensate!!! Isn't that amazing?

Poppy is feeding all the time too but that's what the lactation consultant has advised.

When I went to see her on Friday, she wanted to observe me feeding her and she asked me, "is she due a feed now?" and I said, "She is ALWAYS due a feed!" and she replied, "that's the correct answer"!!

I do wonder whether the hand sucking and head butting is just a reflex thing though? I always put Poppy to the boob when she offers these cues but I wonder whether it's just that they like to suckle all the time?

Sucking is a natural reflex, and they will do it if they are uncomfortable or gassy.. Or if they see something new lol! Babes put everything in their mouths.

But I agree, I dont think you can overfed BM.

I use formula and I do find that if I dont hold off for at least 3 hours she does get an upset tummy. I originally thought she was hungry every time she started fussing or sucking her fingers, but she ended up really upset and spitting up alot.

You can't over feed a baby, they puke up what they don't need.

Puking up all the time isn't healthy either :( Of course babies spit up etc, but if your baby is puking up all the time it can cause problems.

Not true. Caitlyn pukes alllll the time. She doesn't eat too much she is just pukey.

Oh wow thanks guys thats helped alot. Arent boobies amazing! I really love mine now!

I personally dont think you can over feed with bfing. But hand to mouth doesnt necessarily mean he's hungry. And my LO does the head to side thing when he's got wind trapped and needs a burp.

If he's crying on the boob maybe check out reflux? Just a thgouht. Though my LO also cries and grizzles sometimes on teh boob - usually when he's very tired and doesnt want to go to sleep (or more likely doesnt understand the tired feeling and doesnt like it!!)

Actually in a long-term health point of view, vomiting (not dribbling up a bit of milk) every feed is not healthy. It can cause issues down the road. And actual vomiting regularly can be a sign of other issues.

Toria is it certain times?

Caitlin was put down to a 'sicky' baby until I got a quack who knew what they were talking about - she had reflux & suffered for monthssss! I'll never tell someone again that some babies are just 'sicky'.

After all feeds she always puked even if I sat her in her walker for an hour and then let her crawl about be more active she would puke - puke puke puke it was all day :(

gaviscon has helped so much - get it checked out hun? x

Ben has reflux also. He doesn't just be sick, he is clearly in pain, and uncomfortable. It seems to be very common!

She pukes all the time, litterally. The HV said aslong as shes gaining weight she's alright? I was a super sicky baby too?

Thats what I got told aswell, when Jasmine was puking all the time after feeds, my HV sent me down to the doctors as she said it was bad.

Qualifications from a frosties box then!!!

Caitlin has always been 'healthy' ...doesn't mean she didn't have reflux. Imagine being sick all day yourself hun? I'm pissed that I was fobbed off as it isn't comfortable for baby.

See quack quack hun. x

Sam was always like this too - after every feed, even hours afterwards if I put him on his tummy - I was too scared to even put him on the floor on his front at anyone else's house because I knew he'd be sick all over their carpet, even if he hadn't just fed. I was told that his weight gain was ok and it was normal though. I feel awful now thinking that it might have been reflux and making him uncomfortable when I didn't do anything about it but he seemed happy enough.

Since he's been properly on solids it has almost completely stopped though - maybe once or twice a week at the most (usually when he's eaten too much) instead of several times a day x

Thats good solids helped

No go here on that score shes still the same I/we are only hoping going over to full fat milk helps and I'm :( she doesn't likey :(

Hope she gets used to it soon - it was only when I saw your thread about Caitlin having reflux that I realised that Sam might not just a sicky baby - was just as he was starting solids though and it got better really quickly. I think it usually sorts itself out by 12/18 months though so hopefully Caitlin will be better soon x
