Thomas has hot dinners at school but he's asked for packed lunches so I've agreed to trial a week to see how he gets on. He's quite fussy but I'm happy to expose him to new things (he eats with his teacher and ta so I know they will encourage him). I don't want to get stuck sending boring sandwiches so what things do you send?

Mostly sandwiches, fruit and fromage frais with a chunk if cheese and sultanas.
We also send malt loaf. Crackers and sliced cheese or cheese spread (he constructs his crackers at school). We also send wraps (ham, cheese, tuna)
My son won't eat cold pasta salad but that is a lunchtime idea. X

Thanks Dawn :flower:I don't think Thomas would eat cold past either. I could send pizza but I don't think that will go down too well. I guess I'll just have to switch up the sandwich fillings :haha:

It can be tough to come up with different ideas. When lo was at nursery we used to send in a flask with hot soup but he has to get his own lunch out. Worried he would wear it now! If Thomas has assistance that night be an idea.
Sanwiches / sandwich thins / bagels / wraps / mini rolls (M&S do cute ones) / brioche rolls
Oatcakes
Breadsticks and dips
Yoghurt
Fruit smoothie
Chopped veg / fruit
Pretzels
Packs of cheese
Dried fruit
Boiled egg
Crackers and cheese or cold meat
Pasta or rice salad

Thank you for the great ideas, I'll be sure to check m&s!

I've just done his lunch for tomorrow and he has

Wrap with tomato sauce, ham and cheese (like an attack a snack)
Packet of fridge raiders
Grapes and blueberries
Cucumber sticks (I doubt he will eat these)
Yoghurt

I'll add a small m&m cookie as his treat tomorrow.

I pack lunches for mine as we don’t have any other option in NZ. Today they went to kindy and school with:

Ham and cheese sandwich
Yoghurt in a squeezy tube
Apple
Tiny box of raisins
Couple of olives each (they love these)
Couple of cherry tomatoes

They always have some kind of sandwich, usually ham/salami/marmite/avocado with cheese, usually always cherry tomatoes and cucumber/carrot sticks so they get some veggies in (no veggie sticks today as I was in a rush). I’ll also swap out the raisins for strawberries or fresh grapes or a small banana if I have them. Couple of dried apricots also go down a treat and sometimes I give them a small healthy muesli bar depending on what I have that’s fresh.

I don’t give them a treat. I honestly don’t think they need one and they aren’t supposed to bring unhealthy food to school. They’re both obsessed with olives so a couple of those are a treat to them!

What about "healthy" pizzas made from wholemeal pitta bread, tomato purée and cheese? They are delicious hot or cold.

Vegetable and egg mini muffins/crustless quiche - these can be frozen too so I make loads and bring them out each day I need them.

Hummus and vegetable sticks/sliced pitta bread/breadsticks

Chicken drummers

Finger salad - olives, cherry tomato, cucumber, sliced boiled eggs, cheese matchsticks and cold meat. Gracie loves this!

Frittata slices - keeps for a while in the fridge

Fat free yoghurt with fruit fingers

Sugar free jelly - we make our own and add fruit to it. She loves jelly so we need it to be sugar free or she would be hyper 24/7

Sliced apple held together with a band

Avocado and crackers - though someone would probably need to make it up fresh as it doesn't keep well

DIY crackers and cheese with tomato

Gracie is a great eater and is allergic to dairy so she can only have 1 portion a day but loves cheese. She prefers nibbly food like this to real meals

Hello there. I send packed lunches to school and I always send a side of vegetables (cucumber, carrot, lettuce, tomato, radishes, peppers, etc.), a fruit side (cut up apple, orange, mandarin, peach, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, melon, grapes, etc.) and either a cold main dish or a hot main dish. For cold, I send things like sandwiches (you can go for made up or deconstructed, depending on what your little boy likes), wraps, cold pasta/rice/couscous salad, crackers with some sort of spread, picnic selection (cold mini sausages, cheese cubes, veg cubes, bread sticks, fish crackers, hard boiled egg), savoury pancakes, chicken dippers. For a hot main dish, I use thermos funtainer and I send pasta in tomato sauce, pasta bolognese, mac and cheese (rarely), various soups, sausage casserole, stew with mash potato layered in, or sometimes mash mixed with veg and meat; risotto; pie filling with mash on top. I'd send curry but my daughter doesn't like it. Stewed squash can also go in the thermos, and you can mix it with veg and protein to make a more balanced meal, or add cold meat and veg on the side.
I sometimes send in yogurt as well but not too often because she doesn't eat the whole pot.
I don't usually put in a treat but things like dried fruit can count as a treat.
I always add a bottle of water and little plastic cutlery when needed.
I use ice packs to keep the dairy/veg/cold meat cool, and when I use the thermos, I just put the ice pack on one side of the lunch bag (away from the thermos).
Sorry for the novel...

Thank you for the amazing suggestions I really appreciate them. Sorry I've not replied it's been a stressfu week!!

The packed lunches are going ok. I've sent a variation of ham/chess wrap/sandwich and a mini pizza (which he ate half of). I've also sent yoghurts, chicken, grapes/blueberries/strawberries/Apple (didn't eat), cucumber (hasn't eaten 3 days in a row!!) And I'm sending carrot tomorrow.

I send a treat/dessert as they give one with the hot meals. A biscuit, yoghurt or cake with custard etc. I've sent small m&m cookies and tomorrow I'm sending two mini mince pies.

I used a gingerbread man cookie cutter for his sandwich today which he really enjoyed!!

I've been using what I've had in the fridge but I am going to branch out more next week with different things for him to try.
