Partial Placenta Praevia

It was confirmed today at my 36 + 4 consultant appointment, apparently baby's head has been trying to engage but is getting jammed by the partial placenta in the way so I have been booked in for a c-section at 39 weeks. I had a section with my first as she was breech, I know what to expect and althoguh anxious about the op, am not as anxious as I was first time.

I am anxious about going into early labour though, it worried me the way the consultant described a natural birth with the placenta being in the way.

Anybody else been in the same boat previously or currently?

I was a full placenta previa. Just watch out for any bleeding. I had a big bleed at 34+3, and was admitted to hospital 'for the duration' and scheduled to be sectioned at 38 weeks. I didn't make it though as the placenta ruptured three days later. I think the rupture could have happened regardless of the previa. It was scary, but we're both fine now. I did lose a lot of blood, and got a transfusion (4 units). Also, as it was a crash section I was put under.

I did meet several other women with previa, as my hospital admits all previa patients at 36 weeks and sections at 38. I was the only 1 of 4 or 5 that had any sort of complications - the case that proves the rule! They also type and crossmatch all previa patients on admission, and put in a port so that if they end up in a crash situation like mine, they're prepared.

Thanks for replying Alias, it sounds really scary what you went through but I am glad that you and baby are both ok now

I wondered why the consultant kept asking me if I'd hah any kind of bleeds and lost any amount of blood at any point, she kept repeating herself asking me and I didn't understand why at the time but I appreicate what a bleed could indicate now if it was to happen. I am leaning to take these next couple of weeks extra easy but it's a bit difficult with a demanding and active almost 2 year old, but I am more ware now so am trying hard to rest more.

Didn't want to read and run. I had a low lying placenta, found at my 20 week scan but luckily it had moved by the time I was 27 weeks (only for the worry to be replaced immediately by gestational diabetes instead!) I know how worried I was that I would have to go in for a section too, but luckily for me it was a short lived thing.

All the best of luck to you, at least you know what is going on now and have your section date. If you do go into labour, all you can do is get to hospital as quickly as possible to try to prevent any complications (sorry, that sounds like I'm stating the obvious!)

It looks like you could be a Mummy before me now, even though we are due on the same date. I still don't know when mine will arrive as I've not had my induction date yet, I'm hoping that I DO go into spontaneous labour to avoid the induction process.

Thank you Caezzybe, I hope you go into natural labour so that you can avoid the induction. Pregnancy is a worry isn't it, I had it sooo easy with my first, no complications at all apart from my thyroid condition but they kept that under control and then of course she was breech so had to have a c-section but otherwise it fine.
This one however is totally different lol, it has been awful from the very start and even in these last few weeks when I thought it was too late for any new complications to develop I discover I have the placenta problem and they also tested me for GD, although that was last week and no one has contacted me to let me know the results, I'll have had the baby by the time I find out!!
