Hi guys,

This is a warning to anyone who has passed a large clot - please get checked out.

I passed a large (approx tomato sized) clot a few days ago. So I took it to the GP. To be safe he arranged an ultrasound at the hospital to see if there are any retained products. During the ultrasound the hospital found some retained "products of conception". They aren't sure whether the products are more clots or leftover placenta. They said I have two choices:

1. Have an operation whereby they put me under general or spinal block and dialate my womb then suction out the contents; or

2. I can wait a week to see if I pass the products naturally.

I opted for the latter. I have another ultrasound of Wednesday to see if the products have been passed.

Has anyone else experienced this? I really do NOT want to have the operation if I can help it :(

Just noticed you are breastfeeding, this will help contract your uterus and expel any clots/ placenta.

It is very common but it's not nice especially if you have to have a d&c.

Hopefully by Wednesday there will be nothing on the scan:hugs:

What's a d&c? Is that the operation I described? Have you had one?

Yes it is but in obstetrics its actually called manual removal of retained placenta (mrop). I'm a midwife so I've seen a few.

Have they commenced you on antibiotics?

Ive just done a bit of reading and it's actually ERPC (evacuation of retained products of conception). They are all similar though as they are removing contents from the uterus (sorry for being technical)

i had this yesterday but my clot was the size of 2 50p peices- i went to the emergency dr and explained i had ragged membranes- he prescribed antibiotics and told me to only take them if i start cramping really bad or develop a fever; he did say that sometimes this can happen as a natural process. if i clot again and the antibiotics dont work, i have to have an ultrasound too.

I've not had any antibiotics. I have no temperature and don't feel unwell.

But they did find some products on the ultrasound scan so I don't know what's going to happen :(

i had 3 clots in hospital - around the size of a 50p
then when i got home - TMI - but this "thing" came out of me - which i kept to show the midwife, it was horrible - and i was told that it was part of the sac - like membranes etc... even though, my record said that the placenta and everything was intact ?.. hmm.. its so worrying :( i felt ill, but im glad its out !

My babies sac was ragged and I was told to watch for clots too....
The placenta was complete but they couldnt be sure if the amniotic sac had just 'popped' funny or if it truely was ragged and I still had bits in my uterus.
Still, only time will tell given im only 3 weeks post partum.
I've passed 3 clots in total- 2 came away 2 days after birth and another 2 weeks later but the clot that came out recently seemed to disolve so the health visitor put it down to "pooling blood" as membranes or retained products dont normally disolve.

I went to hospital about 4 weeks post partum as I passed two clots about the size if a grapefruit and had bright red heavy bleeding. When they scanned me they said they could see retained tissue and kept me in hospital so they could give me pills to empty my uterus. (I forget what they were called, sorry). They said if the pills didn't work I'd need to have a D&C. They also started me on two types of antibiotics and swabbed me.

The pills did nothing, so I had a second dose, again, nothing. They scanned me again the next day (someone else) and she said she didn't think I had retained tissue at all. They discharged me.

I've had the op ( but under different circumstances ) it's quick and you will be in and out in a matter of hours but I'm not sure how it would feel having it after having given birth as they insert pessaries to dialate the cervix first. It doesn't really hurt too much after

personally I would try and wait and see if it passes in a few days, as someone said the bf may help - if it doesn't and you do have to have the op it's minor

my mum had to have a d&c with my sister, she was in hosp in the morning, out the next morning and had no pain at all. Id rather have the d&C than wait to be honest, i have had a couple of small clots but nothing worth worrying about.

Its quite common, i wouldnt worry about it :flower:

had this too hunny it's just plain horrible isn't it when you think you've gone through the hard part things still continue to exit your body :/

Mine we're larger, but that makes no difference really. Had antibiotics, and they never fully found if it was infection or retained products. When you get them they say keep them YUK yellow gloves came out, and go to the hospital or call midwife to get checked. You must be feeling pretty ill i remember i was, if your losing blood with it and feeling drained, i'd recommend getting plenty of iron into you, it will pass soon either way, but thinking of you cos i know how damn scary it is!! x

I had to call the hospital today because I am 2 weeks pp and am still bleeding a lot of bright red with quite a bit of clotting, and then I passed a large clot today, about half the size of my palm and as thick. I tried to explain to the nurse on the phone, but she didn't seem to be bothered. She said to watch the bleeding, and that maybe the clot was causing the bleeding. If the bleeding continued I am to call my OB. Does this sound right?

seems we all passed clots at 2 weeks pp... how bizarre is that.
my clot actually disolved so health visitor put it down to pooling blood which had come away in the form of a clot and was not actually retained products etc:.... im clueless... never had this with my first son.
