Hi guys,
We are going to my SIL's house for xmas dinner this year and I was thinking of making a pavlova for Xmas pudding. However I've just thought is it ok for pregnant women to eat it? I love meringues and pavlova especially when it's marshmallow like!

Any advice?

My belief is that eggs are fine as long as they are cooked so I don't see why not because you cook meringue. Enjoy

Thanks Hun. That's what I thought too as they'd be cooked, but when I googled it said not too eat them! So confusing!

Ive been eating meringues throughout this preg and all is good :) as pp said aslong as its cooked its fine x

In the UK all eggs have to have the Lion stamp: this means that they have been laid by hens who have been vaccinated against salmonella. Therefore, their eggs are completely safe: raw or cooked. Why guidance hasn't been updated to this effect is beyond me. x

Omg I love runny eggs, but I haven't had any due to the guidance. However I will have them occasionally now! And I think I will make a pavlova. I won't have much anyway....... :haha:

Pavlovas are still soft in the middle, so you take them out before the egg white is totally cooked, so it's the equivalent of a runny egg, not totally cooked, still a bit raw.

Wouldn't bother me though, I just realised I ate pavlova yesterday, yet another example of me eating things without even thinking that others avoid! Given to me by a mother of 7 and a mother of 1, who I can guarantee ate it when they were pregnant :)

They will be updating the guidance next year. I've had the odd fried egg on toast for brekkie during this pregnancy. First time round I really craved soft boiled eggs and fried eggs but stuck to the guidance (back in 2010). Wish I'd done my own research back then! xx

They only just updated it whilst I was pregnant, so its a pretty new thing as is DD pregnancy it was off. That being said I'm one of these free spirit people and decide if people in other countries eat raw egg whilst pregnant then it must be fine. Although it was soft cheese I'd have said no as listeria is really high in them.

Wow I didn't realise this was the case with eggs. It has been torture avoiding licking out the mixing bowl when I'm baking cakes. Now I know I don't have to!
