Does anyone here have PCOS and are on Metformin? I've tried it before but it made me really sick, this time my doc has given me 'slow release metformin'.
Just wondering if it actually helped anyone? My doctor isn't very good at giving information about things! x

Hey I wrote something about this on your journal but within 3 days of starting metformin I ovulated naturally for the first time in years, however it turned out to be a chemical pregnancy.
When u start just start with 1 tablet (500mg) a day and when u have no side effects or symptoms add another tablet and so on til u get to the recommended dose u were given

I have been taking the generic metformin for about 2.5 weeks now. My dr told me to take one 500mg pill at dinner time for the first week and then starting at week two to take one 500mg at breakfast and one 500mg at dinner. So now I'm taking 1000mg per day.

The first week I had nausea and had to go to the bathroom a lot! Those symptoms started fading away by the end of that week. Then week two came along and I had to increase the dosage per day. Those symptoms came back, but now I'm in my third week and it seems like they are slowly fading away as time goes by. To look on the bright side, though, I lost 2.4 pounds this week. I didn't "diet" very well this week so I am sure it had to do with being on the toilet so much. (Sorry, TMI.)

Edit: I have all of the symptoms of PCOS except for actual cysts on my ovaries. *shrugs*

Thankyou for answering me :D

The tablets I have are "Glucophage, prolonged release tablets" 500mg to start off with. The GP didn't say anything to me about upping the dose so I'm not sure what will happen with that :( I'm waiting for AF atm so I'm excited to see if I actually O next month!
I'm so scared of these tablets making me sick, I'm a support worker so I work 24hrs some days, which will not go well with me being in the bathroom a lot! :nope:
But tbh I'm willing to try anything now, after 3 years everything has started to take its toll, I never thought it would take this long!

Kekasmai - I also have all the symptoms of PCOS without the actual cysts! x

Also - Which meal do you recommend to take the tablets with? I was thinking with Tea(dinner), but would that make me sick at night?

When I first started, I began taking them with my evening/dinner meal at around 6-7pm. I would feel sick and have to use the toilet for a few hours. Usually by 10pm-12am I would be able to settle in bed and sleep without needing to go to the toilet. Then the second week I started taking an additional one in the morning at breakfast. That one has really got me annoyed because now I'm feeling sick most of the day, however I'm only going to the toilet for a few hours after I take the pill.

You said you are the the extended release pill, so I'm not sure what you should do. I kind of think it won't matter when you take it because it's going to be releasing gradually throughout the day. But maybe with the smaller amounts being released at one time it won't cause you to feel as sick as I do.

Sorry I'm not much help.

So you didn't get your period first but you ovulated? I can't get an answer from anyone on here about it. I started Met 1000 mg (500 twice a day) yesterday and am wondering what I should expect. I guess I'll continue the OPK's for now.

Yes I got a very faint positive hpt 2 weeks after I started the met. With my son I tested positive 9dpo so i assumed I would've been around the same

I have been on 1000 mg extended release for a year now. It helped at first bring on af but nothing now since May. I am going to finish my prescription and look are other options next month. Also with extended it is typical that the entire day's dose it taken are once usually in the evening.

I've been on met since February and whilst in the beginning it gave me an AF and stopped the excess bleeding (I continued to bleed for months after my last miscarriage and D&C), it hasn't done anything else really since there and I can't attribute it to my weight loss as I have worked very hard to lose what I've lost. I also think I have ovulated a total of one times since Feb so it didn't help me there either.

However I am being advised by my FS to keep taking it due to the benefits of helping to reduce the miscarriage risk whilst pregnant, so I'm continuing. I was meant to be on three a day (1500mg) but had terrible diarrhea/vomiting on that so I've settled on 2 a day (1000mg). I take mine before bed and with breakfast/lunch. :flower:

Hey! I got really sick, like puking my guts out all day the first time I took Metformin, the generic brand. My doctor thought I was intolerant but I just think it was HORRIBLE.

So, she switched me to another brand of it called Glumetza, this did not make me sick at all, I could tell the difference. It's pricier which is why I think it's more gentle, you get what you pay for. It's time-release. It did give me bad diarrhea for a day, but as long as you don't eat greasy food with it, you should be fine! I take mine at random times of the day, but can't take it in the morning because I take Synthroid which has to be taken alone. So if the new one you are on now sucks for you, try asking for Glumetza. I pay 25 bucks a month for 2000 mg a day.

Good luck!!!

Metformin needs to be in your system for 3-6 months before Ttc ideally. I went to see an Endo privately who strictly told me not to get pregnant, yep you can guess what happened, a big whopping Accident before I even started Metformin :( pregnancy no4 which ended in mc.

I am meant to take 500mg twice a day but I haven't bothered since my 6th mc, I just wanted a Break from pill popping.

Diet is really important, carbs and sugar affect Metformin. I haven't had 1 side affect from it, my cycles slipped into bang on 28 days after 3-4 months

I need to start taking it really but I have that many tablets to take each day, it's normally Metformin that I forget.

Xx
