Hi everyone.

Im 20 years old and last week i went to the doctors about my periods having stopped. They have always been really irregular but i have now not had one since before christmas. Before i went to the doctors i did some research and found a page describing PCOS, and i was certain i had it. I have suffered from acne for a long time and nothing the doctors perscribed me ever got rid of it. I also have the hair growth issue.

Anyway, i had a blood test done last week and when i went in for results she hadn't gotten all of my results back yet but the ones she did have she said everything seemed ok. She wants me to to go for an ultrasound now to see if i have PCOS.

I have the number for the ultrasound clinic, but i dont want to do it..mainly because i have read about them doing an internal vaginal scan and i reall dont want to do that. Is there any way i could just have one over my stomach? Please help :(

hi hun
you could have the external scan and they usually do this first. If they get all the info on the things they want to see then that could be it! no internal scan
I've had the trans vaginal scan and it's not that bad, honest!

Give them a ring and explain you are worried
dont let it stop you getting help

Hi amanda, just want to give a little bit of advice here as i work as a sonographer and do these types of scans all the time.... The resolution of a transvaginal scan is far superior to a transabdominal one (over the tummy) because the ultrasound probe is directly next to the ovaries and they can be seen much more clearly. Sometimes it is possible to see over the tummy but more often than not an internal is needed, especially if you have any gas in the bowel or are carrying any extra weight. Where i work we do internal ultrasounds routinely on everyone because the chances of getting an accurate diagnosis is so much higher. I have had 3 now myself and it really isnt so bad.... And i have performed 1000s (well feels like it) and it is over quite quickly. Hope this helps, good luck :flower:

I've had 2 done and theyre fine. You are on a bed with your bum on the edge and are completely covered by a sheet. The sonographer sits to the side of you and they don't even look at your lady garden, they just reach under your thigh and slide it in. The scanner is narrow and smooth (like an exotic toy!) so it doesn't hurt or pinch like a smear can, all you get is a bit of discomfort when it pushes on your cervix. It's in for about 5 minutes while they check your womb lining and ovaries then that's that - you can get dressed and go. But it is completely discrete and only moderately uncomfortable. And it is absolutely the best way to diagnose pcos - thats how mine was found.

Best of luck xx

hey,

I have had LOADS of internal scans and just like the other ladies have said, it really isnt that bad. I was really really really embarrassed as Im quite a big girl but as dragonmummy said, they had a sheet over me and didnt even look. It really is the best way to see everything!! This is probably way tmi but Ive even had one when bleeding so if I can survive that, I'm sure you'll be absolutely fine!!!! Good luck xxxx

like the other girls have said its not that bad honest, i had one for pcos and it was finnnee i also had one in early pregnancy with harry its no bother!

Thanks so much for your advice ladies. I feel abit better about it now. I rang this afternoon and made an appointment, the lady said to have a full bladder, so that means they are going to do an external first im guessing? I guess my fears for the internal is because i am very self councious and cringe at the thought of bearing all to a stranger, even if it is a doctor. But i guess if they put a sheet over you then it wouldnt be too bad :/

Hi hun, I just wanted to say that internal scans arent as bad as they seem honestly. I am 19 years old, so around the same age as you and I had to have an internal last week.

I really didnt want it and I was actually quite nervous. I am the same as you, I didnt like the thought of a stranger seeing that lol. but it was fine and I werent even embarrased. The woman was also very helpful and made me feel less anxious about it all.

As someone else mentioned earlier, you do have a sheet over you. I was suprised as it didnt even seem like the woman had to look to insert it!

Honestly I know its awful but it isnt as bad as it seems and least you can find out what you need to know then.
I have just found out that they think mine may be PCOS and I have also suffered with acne for a long time.

Im here if you wanna chat
xx

one of the only ways to know if you have cysts on your ovaries is an internal scan, if your not TTC its best to know earlier as some things can reduce the size of cysts, if you are planning to try for a baby then you should find out now they might be able to offer you help sooner rather than later.

I am 21 and have sever PCOS. here if u need to talk.

Like everyone else has said, do not worry about the transvaginal! It's really not a thing at all, I didn't even find the instrument uncomfortable, plus my sonographer was a woman, so it wasn't bad! It was actually kind of cool, seeing my ovaries on the screen and stuff. I have PCOS as well.

Plus, you have to kind of get used to people looking between your legs, if you're on here you're either TTC or you want to TTC eventually, there tends to be a lot of probing!

Good luck, and I hope it comes back that you don't have PCOS, it's not fun!

I have had about 3 of these so far, and the good thing is you don't have to sit there with a full bladder! Also, they had me put the probe in myself. So they really don't see anything or are even close to it.. That probe is pretty long so you don't have to worry about them touching you or anything! Good luck hun.
