I am not sure if this is the right place for this or not, so sorry if it isn't! My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for many years now and are seeing an RE for male infertility. We are talking about doing IVF with ICSI soon. Two years ago when I went to my regular doctor, after a year of trying, she thought that I may have PCOS so I did the labs to find out. My prolactin levels were elevated so she made me repeat them and they were in the high end of normal. She told me that I didn't have PCOS. Three years later and I am not convinced that I do not have it. I have unwanted facial hair. I shave my upper lip, side's of my face, chin, and down my neck because I have thick black hairs. I also have them on my stomach under my belly button. I do have fairly regular periods (lasting3 days) but bleed very heavily and have never had a positive OPK. I exercise 4-5 times a week and eat healthy but can not lose weight. It has taken me a year to drop 20 lbs and I gain weight easily. I have also recently had a large ovarian cyst rupture and it feels as if it is back. I gained 10 lbs the two weeks before the cyst ruptured. My regular doctor did not do an ultrasound, just abdominal pushing. I guess I just don't know if it would be reasonable to ask my husbands RE about it if my hormone levels are normal. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

I would go back and ask about it Hun. PCOS in theory can be diagnosed on the symptoms alone, so long as other causes have been ruled out. Have you every had your thyroid checked? A dodgy thyroid can cause very similar symptoms

you've got to get ultrasound done hun!!..that would definately let u know if you have it or not..good luck!!

Not true. PCOS doesn't always show on an ultrasound, you can have the syndrome without the cysts. The name is misleading, but it's basically all about the hormone inbalance and symptoms caused by that and not about actual cysts

oh is it so blood work along with the ultrasound would be fine i guess then ,, I mean hormone checking !!

I got myself done 2 months back and ultrasound came great and my blood work is fine too so I hope I m not having one as I had but cuz i changed all the things which was not doing good to me I got my weight reduced and stuff so no more on ultrasound so I really hope m fine now

Fingers crossed :-) weight is one of the main aggrivators of pcos. I'm trying to get mine down now

Thanks! I had the thyrotropin tested and it came back as 1.360 which I believe is normal. I am just going to ask about it if it can be diagnosed just by symptoms. All of my labs are normal although I have never had a testosterone test done.

Hey, i completely know how frustrating it is. I always knew I had PCOS but my family doctor always said no because I had no cysts...I had every other symptoms though. I was referred to gynae and he diagnosed me with it immediately! Elevated prolactin levels are a symptom as well... maybe if you can, go see another doctor. You do not just grow hair on your face for no reason, right? I hope you get answers soon!!!!:hugs:
