PJ (Peter Joseph, Jr.) arrived into this world on Wednesday, June 27th at 9:40 pm. He weighed 6lbs 8ozs and 18.5 inches long. I was 3 days late but my doctor induced me because she isn't comfortable with letting her patients go beyond that. And it's a good thing she did because when my waters broke, I had meconium. But I'll get to that in a second.
I was induced. At 40+3, I still wasn't dilated or effaced but PJ was engaged. I went in on Tuesday night at 6:30 and the Cervidril was placed at 8 pm. At 6 am the following morning, my waters had broken. Pitocin was started at 7 am. It was a LOOOONG painful day! Around noon I think, my OB realized that PJ had already had his first bowel movement. She wanted him closely monitored from that point on. His heart rate stayed good despite the Pitocin (which can lower the heart rate). At some point, they started losing PJ's heartbeat. He was fine and his heart was beating normally but they couldn't monitor it externally anymore as PJ was moving around so much. So, she inserted an electrode into my cervix and attached it to PJ's head so they had constant contact with him at all times. It took until 5pm to get to 5 cm's. Once I hit 5 cm's, things started moving pretty quickly. By this time I was in tremendous pain and was crying. I tried my best to breathe through the contractions but I just couldn't. My OB agreed to the epidural and what a God send that was! I said to anesthesiologist, "oh you're a wonderful man!"
I was still able to push despite the epidural which was quite a shock to my OB! My contractions, although extremely painful, were quite short and my OB was worried that it wasn't long enough to push him out, so she pushed up the Pitocin. Unfortunately, this caused PJ's heart rate to drop. My OB and the L & D nurse were so wonderful. They stood in front of the monitor so that I couldn't see PJ's heart rate dropping. They shut the Pitocin off completely but then I had no contractions, so they turned it back on but lowered it. PJ's heart rate stabilized and was normal so they left it at that. I finally reached 9 cm's dilated and DH ran out to tell our family. By the time he got back to the delivery room, I had a very strong urge to push. My OB told me not to but PJ was coming! I said to her, "Um, I really don't have much of a choice, he's coming!" She checked me and said, "OMG....this is so great, he's right here!" She hurried up to put her gear on and told me to go ahead and push if I needed to. I told her I needed to and in the middle of her getting her gear on she ran over to me. PJ was out in 3 pushes!!
Since I was still able to push with the epidural, my OB left it on while she stitched me up. The stitching felt like it took forever! I didn't have an episotomy and I tore less than an episotomy tear. I was really uncomfortale and sore for about 2 days, then it started to get better. Within a week, I was able to sit without wincing. So the recovery wasn't bad at all.
Oh and he had no ill effects from the meconium, thank goodness!
PJ came out with his eyes wide opened and just a small tiny cry.![Cloud 9 :cloud9: :cloud9:](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/cloud9.gif)
He is absolutely the light of my life! I can't believe how much love I have for this child! I stare at him in amazement every day, not quite believing that our dream has finally come true and that this beautiful perfect little boy is ours!![Cloud 9 :cloud9: :cloud9:](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/cloud9.gif)
