Placenta abruption

Hi, I hope this is the right place to post this...

I am looking for advice. I was induced with my daughter (my first baby) at 42 weeks which ended in an emergency cesarean under GA. The reason being is that I had total placenta abruption. I don't want to go into the details of her birth but I nearly lost my baby and, along with the severe pain of it, the experience of her birth was terrifying.

The advice I am looking for is how likely it is that a similar thing could happen in a second pregnancy. Ideally I would like another child but have been scared off a little after reading about the condition. Is it true that there is a 1 in 5 chance that this could happen again? What are the chances of having a premmie given that it didn't occur until my baby was 42 weeks? Is it dangerous for me to get pregnant again?

I can't seem to get any real reason for it happening or advice from the professionals... My main concern is being being around for my daughter although I would love to give her a sibling...

I had a total concealed abruption with my first son at 39 weeks. Sadly he was stillborn and I nearly died. I've since gone on to have another son who was induced early at 37 weeks and I'm currently 32 weeks pregnant with my daughter. The current plan is to induce her at 37/38 weeks.

When you have an abruption the likelihood of having another goes up by around 10%. For this reason I will always be classed as a high risk pregnancy (as will you) even though the pregnancy itself is healthy! At the moment I'm under an obstetric consultant as well as a foetal medicine specialist. I have to attend hospital twice a week for CTG monitoring, have extra scans to check placental function/baby's growth, doppler scans to check placental blood flow and also have had extra midwife appointments too.

You will be very closely monitored during any subsequent pregnancy and also offered early induction to minimise the risk of it happening again so please don't be concerned about adding to your family as a plan of care will be put into place for you as soon as you have that first midwife appointment

hi! i also had a placenta abruption, my daughter was born by emergency c-section at 37 weeks and it was a complete shock to us all, i bled out and almost lost her! she is now a perfectly healthy 1 year old, i also had gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and extra fluid with her pregnancy. i am now a diabetic and pregnant again and i too am scared the same thing will happen!
i have 5 health care providers looking after me and managing this pregnancy and im high risk. im worried but i know i am being taken care of!

Thanks so much for your responses... I think I will speak to my doctor about the extra care I will receive before TTC as I was not at all impressed with the midwifery care I received this time... I want to wait another few months anyway as I was advised not to get pregnant for a year after my cesarean.

I know that I will have an early cesarean with No.2 (perhaps 37 or 38 weeks) - I was told that in the hospital and be considered 'high risk' but no one explained what that would mean in my next pregnancy! Sometimes I think reading up via the internet is not the best thing - asking people who have been in the same situation is far more comforting, especially when you both know the terror of the situation.

I feel far more comfortable trying for a second now, especially knowing that such great care is taken to ensure a safe pregnancy...

I had an abruption with my first at 35 weeks. I had other complications with her as well. The second time around I was monitored more closely, but absolutely nothing went wrong. Two days past my due date my waters broke and I was induced. They kept a close eye on baby and particularly his heartbeat, but everything went fine!

I have nothing to add except support. I've been wanting to post something like this for a while. I had an extremely traumatic birth with my son in September due to a placental aburption and even though I'm nowhere near TTC again, I'm just terrified of going through that again. Good luck.
