im worried tonight about my newborn, she is 3 days old and breastfeeding is going well but today she has been sick quite abit after 2x 40 minute feeds tonight. Rang midwife unit and she said ring the call out doctor but i only wanted advice or reassurance so now feel more worried. She is feeding now again after just been sick half hour ago...what am i doing wrong

im not to sure hun but dint wana read and run...could she maybe having too much sorry im not any help x x

It's normal for babies to bring a bit of their feed back up with wind at the end of a feed. Does she seem uncomfortable with it, or does it just come up really easily without her seeming as if she's in pain. Also, is it projectile vomiting that shoots across the room, or does it just go all over her/you/whatever is in front of her? If she's not uncomfortable, you're still getting lots of wet and dirty nappies in a day, and she's satisfied after a feed, I wouldn't worry about it (google possetting - very normal).

I used to worry when Sam used to be sick after most feeds, but he was never ill with it, and the amount of sick compared to what he would be drinking was nothing (seems like a lot, but imagine throwing a teaspoon of milk all over her - would seem like quite a lot). He still does it now at 4 months old and hasn't ever been ill.

You could try winding her in the middle of a feed, even a couple of times, so that there's not so much air in her stomach by the end of a feed (as that tends to force more milk out with it). If she seems to be in pain, unwell or is projectile vomiting I'd take her along to the doctor to get checked out though x

Also, has your milk come in yet? It's common to get quite a lot more than you need at first (it does all settle down after a couple of weeks!) so it's possible that she's taking a bit more than her stomach can hold and throwing that up afterwards.

Might also be worth taking her temperature x

Thankyou samsmum, she doesnt seem ill with it and if anything wants more milk. Each feed is at least 40 minutes every couple of hours..is that too much? Also my milk came in today and my boobs are big (for me) and have lumps in. I just dont seem to know what im doing do i.):

I didn't have a clue at first! If the lumps are small and you notice them when your breasts are full they're just milk ducts. They should empty as she feeds but if they don't you can massage them towards the nipple in a hot shower so they don't become blocked. Mine still get lumps in them if they get really full.

Sounds like the increase in milk is just more than she's used to. It does all settle down though. For the first few days (before your milk comes in) they can suck for hours and not get too much, but she may just be sucking for comfort once she's full and taking more than she needs. If she's not unwell and you're getting enough wet and dirty nappies I wouldn't worry at all.

And just let her feed when she wants for as long as she wants - some babies drink more quickly, so a 10 minute feed for one baby might be the same as a 40 minute feed for another (they do get more efficient at getting the milk out after a few weeks though). At first I was feeding Sam for 30 mins to an hour every 2 or 3 hours so what you're doing sounds great! x

It sounds like you are doing really well. It can be very confusing in the beginning when you just feel like you don't have a clue. As Sam's mum said, as long as you are getting enough wet diapers, I wouldn't worry about the rest. It's very normal for them to urp up milk. You just kind of have to relax and go with the flow- believe it or not, most babies are born kind of knowing what they need to do (with a little help and patience from mom sometimes). I really feel like my son was the one who taught me to bf. Just try to trust her and your body, taking your cues off of her. 40 minutes is fine- especially in the beginning she is going to nurse longer and more frequently to really get your supply up. And as soon as you think you have figured out her "schedule," she will probably change it up on you. Just keep her close to you, let her nurse as often/long as she wants to, and try to have some patience to weather the storms when they come up. It sounds like your milk is coming in and she is getting plenty now. But you will hit growth spurts where you are not making enough and she may become fussy and cry alot until she can get your supply up again- it only lasts a day or two and again- take your cues from her about how often/long she is wanting to nurse. I know this was not really your question, but I just wanted to let you know since you are only 3 days in. I had been warned by my sis and mom that bfing is not always easy- growth spurts can make a mom want to give up. But my first week or so was sooo easy I thought "what on earth are they talking about, this is easy???" And then the more difficult weeks followed of trying to get the supply/demand issue stabilized and I understood. I found it helped me survive those weeks having been warned. So try not to worry- everything you are doing/experiencing is normal and great...and even if she does go through a fussy period, have some patience and keep doing what you are doing.
