Hey ladies.
I had my 20w scan yesterday and we found out we are having a baby girl :D
Everything seemed all fine, but they called another sonographer in at the end to look at my lo and he said that her kidneys are slightly enlarged and retaining urine, though my fluids are all fine and everything else on the scan measured out great. I had an NT scan back at 12w and everything came back super normal then too... Im just worried, anyone know anything at all about this???
I have been researching it and some people say its a soft marker for Downs?!?!?! and that its more common in boys.. but im having a girl. the sonagrapher wants me back in at about 5 more weeks to check them again. Im SUPER WORRIED NOW :( I just wanna be happy, but don't know if I should be worried... Help anyone???

Im sorry you are going through this! My situation is very different than yours. I have no fluid & my baby is missing kidneys but What i do know is if your doctor doesnt show huge initial concern than a "wait & see mode" is better. its hard not knowing whats going on but I can tell you they are probably waiting to see if your amniotic fluid levels change.get some rest KEEP YOUR WATER INTAKE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!!! & just wait for news. -im thinking about ya hang in there!!!

Hey there. I'm in the same situation, and am also having a little girl. At 20weeks one of my LO kidneys was measuring quite large, they Dr told me that this can be quite common but should have completely resolved itself by 30weeks, at which point they will do another scan. My scan is next week so fingers crossed her little kidney has decided to fix itself!

During my 20 week growth scan they found his right kidney to be slighty enlarged. We have had follow up scans every 4 weeks since then.and the kidney has remained slightly enlarged. I have one more scan and if its still enlarged at birth he will be on antibotics so no kidney infections occur and ultrasound monitoring to see if it fixes itself. My doctor said most of thr time it fixes itself way before birth so try not to worry. I also saw it was a soft marker for downs but my screen and his nuchal folds have come back fine. You can request more detailed test for downs if its something you would need to know. But really its very common and will probably fix itself.

ohhh sorry honey - its upsetting isnt it finding out that your lo has a small issue.

I have been told exactly the same as you my chap is retaining urine in one kidney - but i was not until 31 weeks (and i have exceptionally low % of downs). They have told me that the baby will need to be checked out when born and then on anti bios 7 days to prevent infection. Then they can test whether its a more serious problem and might need to be monitored for a couple of years but unfortunately nothing can be done until your baby is born and then they can check everything out.

One thing which put my mind to rest is that you dont actually need 2 kidneys and the baby will able to grow up and do anything in life. Also, the scanner man said that if it wasnt due to advances in technology 30 years ago no one would have this information / knowledge and everyone else gets on well.

Try not to worry honey - easier said than done xxxxx

thanks everyone who responded. I have a checkup with my OB tomorrow and will talk with her and see what she says.. as I have had no info since last wednesday when I found out... I have calmed down.. .but it is still on my mind every day :( I pray every day that my baby girl is oK

Hope all turns out ok for you and your lo as a previous poster stated most cases clear up before birth. Kidney enlargement is the most common abnormality found. My lo had an enlarged kidney at 21weeks unforunately his continued to dilate at each scan. He 2 weeks old now he did have an operation at 5 days old as he had an obstruction just below the kidney. Please try not to worry our outcome is rare little man had it severe was dilated to 57mm at birth. If you need any advise feel free to pm me

I don't really have any advice as such but i wanted to say sorry you are having to worry about your LO.

My daughter has an unknown kidney issue. She has had it since birth and gets repeated urine infections every month. Only they are not true urine infections. They always come back negative but she has all the symptoms and temperature etc. She is now on daily antibiotcs and is doing fine. She has check ups every 6 months for blood tests etc but she is doing ok now we have it under control. She had to have scans etc and one of her kidneys was retaining urine a little too. She has been ill a lot over the last 2 years but that is because no one knew what the problem was or how to deal with it but now it's being dealt with it's much easier.

You LO will be just fine too :)
