I am back on this board as I have just found out I am pregnant again. Unfortunately I see so many people talking about negative c-section experiences (and I am so very sorry for those that had complications) but I want you to know that it can also be very liberating.
I got pregnant with my DD after 2 painful and complicated losses and ended up on an exercise ban b/c I was getting contractions when I did exercise.
At about 36 weeks it seems like my DD had stopped growing so they began to monitor me on a weekly basis. At 39 weeks it was decided she needed to come out to eat so she could grow.
We tried pitocin for 2 days. Her heart rate dropped too many times (down to 60 beats a minute for 4 minutes) and the OR had no openings except for emergencies. My pitocin was stopped and I had to decided to either try a third day or have a c-section.
The hospital did not have any medicine in stock I was not allergic to for epidurals so I was facing general anesthesia. I still chose a c-section.
From the time I fell asleep until the time my DD was in my arms was 45 minutes. Her initial APGAR was 8!! My DH got to have skin-to-skin until I was awake (we found so much chest hair in her diaper it was hysterical!). She latched on within minutes of my holding her - a nurse did help b/c I was still very groggy but I remember everything. We bonded.
I was on my feet w/in a couple of hours. The next day I was taking short walks around the hospital and was cleared to leave after 2 days instead of 3. My DH did have to pick her up at night when she woke to feed for the first week and pass her to me while I sat up but that was not a big deal and he enjoyed it. Within 1 week I was walking one mile and was on my mt. bike after my 6 week follow-up. (My 3 friends who delivered w/in the same week took much longer to get on bikes b/c of tearing). I healed so quickly it was amazing!!
I do not have incontinence. I do not have to worry about prolapse later in life (which most women who have vaginal deliveries will face). My DD's head was perfect, no cone head, no bruising, no more trauma for her.
I will have a c-section again this pregnancy as our hospital does not do v-bacs but, since my hips would not open before, I think it's the safest option. By planning ahead I will not have to have general anesthesia.
Sure, I wish I had felt contractions but, in the long run, all I have a scar which is barely visible and no other long-term effects. (My c-section was 13 months ago.)
I am a proud c-section mama!
