Today my doctor said I was 0.1 above normal, whatever that means. He said that even that much would justify him sending me for the 3 hour test, but that he wouldn't put me through that if I agreed to cut sugar out of my diet. He said complex carbs in moderation are fine.

Do I have GD then or not?

I wouldn't think so.
If you are worried, go for the test. Its not that big a deal, and then you'll know. But a point isn't a big deal...

Im being treated as if I have it but have been that I am only borderline so basically I had to change my diet but Im not on insulin...it confuses me to because when I go to the Dr they always say that I am borderline and ask how its going so Im not much help sorry  Im just as confused but I do keep to the diet and check my blood sugar which is always good so Im not to worried :)

oh and they said I was borderline from my 3hr test so that didnt help me

i was borderline last time. they sent me for the three hour though. i just monitored with diet and the meter. this time though it never went away and well i've got type 2 and just put on insulin. but if you are border you won't have insulin. just follow the diet and listen to your doc you'll be fine

Id opt to go for the longer test, its not a big deal and its better to know. Pain having to sit around waiting but you are slightly more likely to get an accurate result.

My doctor didn't even offer the 3-hr test. Said he'd rather me just cut out sugar. Maybe he doesn't actually think I have it, but wants to make me cut back on sugar regardless?

well cutting back sugar during pregnancy is a good idea anyway. You arent having large amounts of sugar or carbs are you? Not eating heaps of fruit or ice cream or sweets or mashed potato? If not then dont worry about it too much, just maintain a sensible healthy diet with plenty of fibre and protein.

It is possible to be borderline. I had a glucose tolerance test at 33 weeks, because baby's abdomen was measuring larger than it should be, although all my other glucose checks had been normal. A "normal" result from the test for me would have been 7.8 mmol/L after 2 hours, wheras my result was 7.9mmol/L. Since then, I've had to check my blood sugar levels 4 x day, and these have all been within normal limits. Problem is that once you are over the limit, the maternity hospital I'm cared for in treat everyone the same - so it means that for any subsequent pregnancies, I'll be treated as if I have GD because of one test. While you should probably have the test, if that's what your doctor advises, be aware of the consequences of even being "borderline" before you agree to it.

I agree its possible to be borderline too, I was with my first. The thing to rememeber too its not just sugar alone that mucks everything up. Refined foods are evil for playing silly buggers with your blood sugars as well as too much fruit and fruit juices. You need to eat foods as close to their natural form as you possibly can so your body has to work to convert them, therefor slowly releasing the sugars into your blood stream. Look for foods that are low Glycemic, or low GI's.

I was told by my Endocrinologist and Nutritionist that there is no "Borderline" you either are or aren't. Even if you 'failed' by .01% it is still a fail.

The GDM diet is very good for you, and it definitely won't hurt if you followed it. :hugs:

I've heard that too. I'm confused. I plan on getting some answers at my doctor's appointment on Friday.

I didn't get a choice whether to take the three hour test or not I just got told to go see my midwife (which will be this afternoon) and she'll book it for me. It was happened upon accidentaly when they were checking my pre eclampsia, which I've also got!

My advice is to get the test done. I agree that it is sensible to follow a low sugar diet anyway but there can be serious consequences if you do have GD and it is not very carefully managed. I had GD with my DS 17 years ago and the hosp told me this time that they will just treat me as though I have it again. I refused and demanded a test, so far I'm ok, level is at 6.8 but I am going to be tested again at 28 wks. It's a pain but far better to know. How did your doc decide that you are 0.1 above? If he used a urine test they are very subjective and could easily be wrong, even a finger prick depends on what you have eaten/drunk recently and how active you have been.
I know quite a bit about diabetes, my mum has it, my dad died of long term complications from having it undiagnosed and as I said I had GD last time so if you want to ask anything please feel free and I'll do my best to answer.

Very best of luck and if you do have GD, good management will mean that it shouldn't affect your LO xx
