My brother's girlfriend was just taken from her doctor's office by ambulance to a specialized hospital due to very high blood pressure & water retention. She is almost 29 weeks & they said the baby weighs 2 lbs. They are trying to get her blood pressure down.... and if not, the baby will have to be delivered.

From your experiences, is it possible to bring her blood pressure down & go on to carry the baby to term???

What should we expect with a premature baby born this early??

Please share your stories with me. This is my brother's first baby & he waited a long, long time for her! (He's 35). I'm trying to stay positive but feel panic setting in! :sad1:

Hi, I also suffered from severe pre eclampsia and my twins were delivered at 31 weeks 24hours after I was admitted to hospital with PE.

High blood pressure is only one of the symptoms of PE & so whilst they will be trying to reduce your SILs blood pressure they may still need to deliver baby early if the PE is severe as the only "cure" is to deliver the placenta and therefore the baby.

At 29 weeks the baby will be small and may have immature lungs and therefore need assistance breathing. It could also suffer with brain bleeds & problems with its intestines as these will also be premature. Or it could just be small & suffer with none of these problems!!! Every baby is different and therefore it is impossible to say what to expect.

Hopefully your SIL will have time to have steroid jabs to mature the baby's lungs as these really do help, and obviously the longer they can keep baby in the better as every day really does count!!

If you want to know anymore pop over to the prem section, there are loads of mums there who have had babies at 29 weeks (& earlier) & they are a really friendly bunch who will be more than happy to answer any questions you or your SIL may have.

Here's hoping baby can stay put for a while longer x

Thank you so much for your reply. Your boys are absolutely adorable!!!!!! It's 3am & i CAN NOT sleep. Anxious to drive to the hospital tomorrow & see what's going on. From everything i have read so far, seems after developing severe PE, women deliver very soon after. I will check out the premature section, didn't realize there was one. Thanks!

I had the sudden and severe onset of PET and they delivered my little girl 24 hours after diagnosis, when they had managed to give me 2 steriod injections for her lungs...she was born at 29 weeks on christmas morning 2005 weighing 2lbs 5ozs...the problem with PET is that the placenta can start to fail and not let oxygen through, and the only 'cure' as already said is to deliver the baby and placenta.

My little girl spent 7 weeks in SCBU, and luckily didn't have any health issues or ongoing concerns, she is now a healthy and bright 4 year old (going on 14 some days)

Every case really is different, as is every baby...sometimes, although the babies are small and need to grow and mature, they have a better chance in SCBU than the womb.

Is she showing protein in her urine?...thinking of you all and keeping fingers crossed!! :flower:

It's wonderful to hear stories with happy endings. The docs have been able to get her BP back to normal -- but yes, she has a great deal of protein in her urine. She is still at the hospital being closely monitored. She has completed the rounds of steroids for the babies lungs over the last 48 hours.

I love the name Reagan, by the way -- so pretty!

Aww thankyou...she was going to be called Taylor until she popped out!!

Glad your brother's girlfriend is doing okay, every day she can keep the baby inside the womb is an added bonus...please keep us updated?

Similar story here I was 34 weeks when I went in for a routine appointment, my bp was sky high and my protien in my urine was off the scale. I had an emergency c section 24 hours later after devolping eclampsia and fitting :( I also had the steriod injections which really help.

I hope she keeps the baby in a little longer :) xxx

I see a lil preemie baby with a note she was born yesterday!! Hope mum and baby are both doing well, how much did the LO weigh?

Gianna weighed 2 lbs 8 oz.... & is doing well! Thanks for asking!
