Just wondering what the maternity units in and around Manchester are like. I've been here a year or so and haven't heard much about any of them, so have no idea of their reputations etc. Our neighbour told us NOT to choose North Manchester General if we can help it, but that's about it..

Hi

it depends where abouts you are; I had one of my boys in Stepping Hill (South Manchester/Stockport) and that place was like the Hilton compared to hospitals in London (all delivery and recovery rooms have their own very new kitchen and bathroom plus they more recently opened a birthing centre); lovely midwives too. Apparently they are the best in the country...

Im going to Salford Royal birthing center after a recommendation by someone I know, she said they were great! xxx

Thankyou. I forget how big Manchester actually is - we only had one choice of hospital in Derby. I'm in North Manchester.

I had Joe at Wythenshawe, fantastic delivery suite staff. They also have a brand new midwife led birthing suite with pools, plasma screen tvs, IPOD docking stations and kitchens!!! BUT I thought the post natal care was APPALLING.

They really didn't care that I was struggling with breast feeding, despite asking for help.

My baby lost so much weight in the first 5 days of his life, he had to be re admitted to see if there were any problmes (thankfully not)
We were admitted to Stepping Hill in Stockport and I couldn't fault their care, all staff very kind and caring.
My friend had her baby there and said the same.
I'll be going there for number 2!

xxxx

I had two of my children at hope hospital and they were ok but the aftercare wasnt up to much. Im having this one at stepping hill x

Stepping Hill is incredible; made my local hospital here in London look like a Victorian workhouse! I was born at SH as well, my mum said its always been ahead of its time. The midwives when I had my son there were lovely; one of them was dressed and fully made up more like she worked behind the make up counter in debenhams which was a little bit odd but they were both really nice; the other was a student midwife with 5 kids. The post natal care was really good as well; and they brought me breakfast (in my local hospital in London you have to go in this big common room to get it) and they provided these little nighties that were easy to put on and off and the cots had proper blankets and sheets (again sounds unremarkable but my local hospital in London uses threadbare, scratchy towels instead!) so my son actually slept a good few hours. As we decided to go home soon after the birth; they put me in a recovery room with two beds but no-one was in the other one so it was nice and private; and again it was en-suite with a little kitchen.

Stepping hill in Stockport. It's care for everything is horrendous but maternity, baby and child wise it's the bees knees!! We are A little drive away but me and oh insisted xx

stepping hill for me :)
i've had to go in a few times for bleeds, & have been looked after amazingly. i'm glad it's got such a good reputation!
xx

I'll be going to the new birthing centre at Wythenshawe as I only live a few minutes drive away.

I'm going to Wythenshawe Hospital this time (had Poppy at Trafford General but it's shut now). Not really a fan of Wythenshawe hospital to be honest but also didn't want to travel into Manchester City Centre to get to St Mary's. Wish we lived closer to Stepping Hill, have heard nothing but good things about it.

I started off my care at Hope Hospital and was quite happy with it but I was admitted to the maternity ward with a kidney infection and the care was crap! So I transferred. Charlie was born at Stepping Hill who I have nothing but praise for!!! Absolutely fantastic! Clean, so helpful, lovely midwives, lovely birthing pool rooms, and I couldn't fault them if I tried x

i am at fairfield bury dunno if its too north for you, labour ward is still there, its a bit old fashioned but the post and pre natal wards are quite new and clean x

Im also going to be at Fairfield - went for a hospital visit and looks ok - smaller than i imagined though.

i had my DD at stepping hill and it was fantastic :D i would recommend it :D

I had my son at North Manchester General in 2009.. Due again in Nov this year, if it's not a home birth (I haven't decided yet) then I'll have no issues going back to NMGH..
The midwives were lovely, the aftercare was fab, especially when it comes to breastfeeding etc, and the rooms are clean and nice..
They have been in the process of updating for some time now and they have a brand new antenatal area..
I never had any issues at all, even being put on a ward once my baby was born, I had no problems, it was really spacious and everyone had lots of room to move around etc, it was nice and quiet and had really friendly staff.. The only real problem I experienced there (which I have also experienced elsewhere) is that it took them ages to do the paperwork so we could be released.. We should have been allwoed to go at about 12.30pm, and ended up leaving at 4pm instead. However, if I compare this to other hospitals I've been in, it's nothing at all, just a minor gripe!
I don't know why you've been recommended to go elsewhere, from my experience it was topnotch - especially when I compare it to two other hospitals I've given birth in in Kent.

I'm booked in at Fairfield too. Have only had one scan there so far, so can't comment personally, but a friend of mine that works for the NHS said they are one of the good places within the trust to have a baby.

im going to wythenshawe again, the ante natal and delivery is excellent but the aftercare is a bit bobbins

i had the older 2 at tameside omg it was a hellhole

LOL tameside is the back of beyond anyway. No offence but I used to live there and the whole borough seemed stuck in a time warp :D
