OK so we're established now and I'm very happy with how things are going.

I'd like to start pumping 1 feed per day for my hubby to be able to give her and so I can leave her for a few hours early in December when I have a long standing commitment I want to fulfill.

So when do I do it?? I started last night but bugger all was coming out!!! My milk supply is fine but I dont wanna cock it up either.

Any help much appreciated.

x

First thing in the morning is the best as that's when you've got loads of milk.

I've also done it right after the first morning feed. Pumping from both sides. Works for me!

Hi
I was also told to do it inthe morning but I find that whichever side Poppy feeds from is empty after she's done so I always just pump from the one she's not had. I only ever get about 40ml though, not enough for a feed. My hv said if you do it at the same time each day your supply will increase and you'll get more out but I've been at it a couple of weeks now and still only get the same. My hub gives it to Poppy at night but only as a little 'top up' and I feed her straight after.

I pumped first thing this morning on the opposite side to where she was feeding. I was like a milking machine!! Baby on one - very noisey pump on the other
I managed to get about 2 oz which is more than I've managed before. I've stashed it in the fridge and I'm ready to pump again later and add to it. If I can get 1 feed together that would be great :)

I would feed on one side and pump the other

That's what I do. I've never got much in the evenings, even after we've been out and Sam's missed feeds. I'll get enough for a feed from one side in the morning though. Even better if I can get up before Sam, pump one side then feed him from the other. Then I'll have enough to feed him again from the pumped side by the time he's hungry again.

2oz is great for the first time you've pumped! If you're doing it for a few days you'll soon start making a bit more x

What would be an average amount for one feed? I managed 2oz in a bottle but she wanted more.
xx

Thanks! I'm sat here pumping again. I'm now doing the opposite side and due to feed her from the other in the next half hour - in fact I started pumping coz she's stirring. I've got over 1.5 oz so far :happydance:

hey hun i either early morning 4-5 am if she wakes up for a feed its usually only one boob because they are so full from the night so did it this morning got 3 1/2 oz no wonder my nightie was soaked?( the joys of bf hehe) re u saving the milk up in freezer bags???? another tip my hv gave me was after every feed pump the rest out this was to get my milk supply up though but it really worked, the only time im low is at the 10 o/c feed which is when we top up with the expressed from the morning. not sure if it helps but if you are doing regular pumping do you have an electric pump they are so easy 5 mins and im done, mines a medela swing pump, bought it new of ebay and it was only £50 well worth it and it cleared some blocked ducts i had

Thanks Heather. ATM I am sticking it in bottles towards the back of the fridge then once its all cold I'll join it together for a feed. I've just ordered some freezable bottles that fit my pump - I have a Medela Mini Electric - I got it of ebay for £15 which I thought was a bargain. I didnt want to spend too much to start with until I knew I'd use it. If this goes well I might invest in a Swing as the Mini is quite noisey.

I'm feeling very pleased with myself!!! :smug:

It's 2AM and I'm trying pumping again. I've only been getting 40 ml or and a bit out when pumping. I just started over the past few days in earnest and have been very frustrated.

However LO had a formula bottle this evening early and so breasts got full. As I want to be able to go out during the day on the weekends sometimes and as I'll be back at work in February I wanted to get LO used to the bottle early. But I wanted to have expressed milk first at least.

Tonight was the first time I've gotten a full bottle! However considering the advice here, I may try the morning feed time.

Thanks for this thread!

Lisa -

So glad you started this thread as I have had the same questions. I am going to try pumping tomorrow morning on one side during her first feed, I found I can't get much of anything in the afternoon or evenings as she clears me out. She goes through these cycles of cluster feeding and then will sleep up to 3 1/2 hours!! Killer on my poor nipples!! I can't wait until she has settled down into more of a routine but she's getting better. I love that our babies are only a day apart!! :hugs:

Hey Terri!! Our girls sound very silimar too. Hebe is sleeping really well at night - between 4 and 7 hours!!! So my boobs are ripe for pumping first thing!! During the day I've no chance really. Let me know how you get on. xx
