Baby Daniel made his fast entrance into this world at 7.34am on Thursday 7th February following an early induction at 36+6 due to pre-eclampsia. Here's the story...
Tuesday 5th Feb:
My blood pressure had been raised for a week so I went to see my midwife on Tuesday to get it checked. She found it to be 150/108 with ++ protein in my urine so sent me straight up to the hospital to be checked out on the day assessment ward where they monitored me for 4 hours and it never dropped below 100. At 4pm they made the decision to admit me and monitor my bp overnight and see what would happen in the morning.
Wednesday 6th Feb:
My blood pressure dropped slightly overnight, coming down at it's lowest to 140/94, but not low enough so they made the decision to induce me at lunchtime. At 12.30pm I had the pessary inserted and warned that it could take 24 hours for anything to happen, and even then they might have to put me on a drip to get me started. Within the first hour I started getting backache and by 3pm I was getting really uncomfortable so put my tens machine on. I wasn't having contractions - just an ongoing period type pain in my back. By 6pm I was in a lot of pain, but still no distinguishable contractions, just rolling ongoing back pain. At 10pm I was in a LOT of pain, all in my back, constant, no contractions. The midwife checked me and said nothing was happening, my cervix was still high and closed with no sign of anything happening, but due to the amount of pain I was in, they gave me a diamorphine injection so that I could get some sleep, which worked WONDERFULLY, and they said they would reassess me in the morning.
Thursday 7th Feb:
Woke up at 4am in absolute agony as the diamorphine had worn off. Still no contractions, just constant pain in my back. I insisted that the midwife checked me even though they thought nothing was happening. The look of surprise on the midwife's face when she told me I was 5cm was quite the picture. At this point they called my husband to come in and sent me down to delivery suite. On arrival I told the midwife I wanted to have an epidural but she told me it was still too early! But that I could have another diamorphine injection - which was absolute bliss. I believe I went back to sleep at this point and only vaguely remember them telling me they were going to break my waters. Once they broke them, Daniel's heart rate started to worry them so they put a clip on his head to monitor him more efficiently. From this point everything goes very hazy and my husband said everything happened very fast. Within the hour they told me I was 10cm and I needed to push as he was starting to get stressed. For me the pushing was the worst part - it felt like I was going to explode. He was still struggling so they told me they would do an episiotomy but apparently I tore before they managed to do it. Then the next thing I know is they are delivering him by ventouse and he is out in a matter of minutes. They put him on my chest for about 5 seconds before whipping him away to check him over. At this point I black out and lose all recollection of what happened. My husband and notes tell me the placenta was delivered in 1 minute and I lost approx 1 litre of blood. I don't remember this at all, I only remember waking up on the Transitional Care Ward later that afternoon.
My notes tell me that my labour was 3 hours 35 mins long, but it certainly felt faster than that. I never got an epidural as it all happened too quickly and am quite proud that I managed to do it without one as I have a very low pain threshold. Daniel and I had to stay in hospital for 5 days to have my bp monitored, and to recover from the blood loss as I developed severe anaemia. My haemoglobin dropped to 6.3 and the doctor said "i'm not sure how you are still conscious!".
Daniel and I are now both doing well and he is settling in at home![Smile :) :)](/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
