Hi ladies! I'm wondering how many of you were told to fast before your 1hr glucose screening test. This is my 4th baby and I have a different Dr than with my first 3. (I moved to a different state) With my first 3 I was always told to fast for 12 hrs before the test. I have always tested in normal range. In my 3rd pregnancy I tested at 140 but was chewing gum when I got to the lab and my doctor said that was why and so didn't send me for the 3 hr test. This time my doctor told me not to fast. Even the receptionist was surprised and confused. When she was printing my papers for the lab she reminded me to fast and I told her the Dr said not to she left her desk to go verify with her. She came back and said that I was right she said not to fast and that she's a new doctor at this office and she must do it differently than the other doctors. Anyway my appointment was at 11am and I had a bagel with cream cheese for breakfast around 9am. Dr called yesterday and said I tested at 165 and I have to go for the 3hr test on Tuesday. Do you think I tested high because she didn't have me fast? Were any of you told not to fast for your 1hr screening?

I was told to fast from midnight the night before. Only water. No gum, nothing. Good luck!

Yes, there was a discussion here about this issue recently, and a lot of ladies said that their doctors had told them not to fast. No idea why.
A bagel itself is 70-75 g of carbs, and then you added another 50 g, so probably you body didn't have time to process that many carbs in a short period of time. In that case you will pass the 3 hr test easily (then you have to fast 12 hours)

My doctor sends the stuff home with you. Here are the instructions that I copied from their
web page.

Keep the glucose drink refrigerated until it is time to drink it.
Drink the entire bottle of the glucose drink within 5 minutes.
Drink the glucose drink about 45 minutes before you are to arrive at our office.
Remember exactly what time you finished the drink. Your blood will need to be drawn one hour after you finished the glucose drink.
When you check in at the front desk, be sure to tell the receptionist what time you finished your glucose drink. If your blood is not drawn one hour after you finish the glucose drink, the test must be repeated.
You do not need to fast before this test. You may have a regular breakfast, lunch, ect. However this means to avoid foods and drinks with sugar. Also once you finish the glucose drink you are not to have anything to eat or drink except water. This includes any gum or candy.
We will notify you of abnormal test results. If results are normal, we will discuss them with you at your next appointment.
This test is a screening test. This means that if your blood sugar is too high you will need to take a more definitive test to determine whether or not you actually have gestational diabetes.

Thank you for your responses ladies - well I went for my 3 hr test this morning so by tomorrow I should know if it was the bagel or if I have GD....
