As i am tryink OPK's this month and have still not had a positive i thought i would ask a question about my luetal phase. Although i can't be sure what this is (i'm going to try charting next cycle to work it out) if i do get a positive sometime soon on my opk's it may mean that i have a short luetal phase but i'm confused as i thought if you had this it makes it pretty impossible to conceive and i have conceived twice. It just had my worrying so any thoughts / info appreciated.

yeh i think if u have a short LP it lessens ur chances of pregnancy gona go n have a look lol xx

https://www.webwomb.com/luteal_phase_frame_page.htm h2h hun xx

It depends on what you class as a short Leautal Phase - A LP of less than 9 days is not desirable as it can make concieving more difficult.
How many days do you think your Leutal Phase is?

i always get confused bout this lol even reading the link im confuzzeled!!!! but with me im not even sure if i ovulate!!! xx

I'm not exactly sure at the moment but af is due in 12 days and i've been using opk's since pretty much a week into my cycle and still haven't had a positive result so if i go by that i haven't yet ovulated unless i'm going to in the next couple of days

have u used opk's in previous months?? if so when did u get positive?? xx

Just read that link and it confirms that a short leutal phase can cause fertility problems as implantation can't take place so maybe i'm worrying over nothing! Will have to see what happens when i start charting maybe i'm just one of those people that opks' don't work for well the cheapy ones don't appear to if i have ovulated and it's not detected it!

I'm not an expert, but with the amount I have been reading, it won't be long before I am. :dohh:

I have only been ttc for 2 and a bit months. The first month I used cheapie OPK's, but got a really feint test line the first 2 days of using them and then nothing to the end of my cycle. I didn't know what this meant at this stage.

Then, I bought a Clearblue Fertility Monitor and it asked me to test from CD6. It transpired that I ovulated around CD9 to CD10, which is very early in my cycle (which by the way is 24 days long).

If I O'd on CD9, then I would have a 15 day Leutal phase and if I O'd on CD10, my Leutal phase would be 14 days long. Both are considered normal.

That's all I know on this topic. Hope it helps in some small way.

There could be a number of reasons why you have not seen a positive this cycle

1) You did not ovulate this month, it's quite normal for women to not ovulate one cycle a year.

2) You have not ovulated yet, factors in your life i.e. stress can delay your ovulation

3) Your surge may last last than 24 hrs so if you test only once a day, you might have missed it

4) Your LH surge isn't strong enough to test positive.

Since you didn't get a positive test this cycle, it would be difficult to count the days in your LP. Hopefully next cycle, you will know your cycle better by charting & testing OPKs.

akcher gave some great answers to this...

The place on your ovary that burst to release the mature egg is called the corpus luteum. This structure produces progesterone from ovulation to the first day of your period, unless implantation happens in time in which case it continues to produce progesterone until the placenta can take over at around 12 weeks gestation.

When women measure their bbt (basal body temperature) they are basically tracking the production or non production of progesterone as when progesterone is being produced, a womans bbt rises, and when it isn't it is lower.

Unless implantation occurs within 9 days of ovulation the corpus luteum dies and the uterus sheds it's lining. If implantation occurs in time; hcg is produced which entices the corpus luteum to continue producing progesterone which maintains the lining of the uterus to sustain pregnancy.

A fertilized egg can implant into a rich uterine lining and begin to produce some hcg, but if the woman has a problem with the amount of progesterone she produces, or has a luteal phase defect, she will not sustain an early pregnancy.

Hope that helps!

but b aware OPK's aint always right as i know someone who was havin blood tests n doin OPK's n OPK's showed pos but blood tests showed neg xx

Well, I think my LP is around 15 days, which by the looks of it is good? I'm really not to clued up on this subject, it's one of those things I've never really followed, but I hope you find your answers

I think I have a long LP. I guess thats a good thing?

15 days is good and very normal.

I have heard that you LP never changes.

Very rarely changes, and if it does it's only by a day or so. I would say once or twice a year I will have a longer luteal phase ... 11 days vs 10.

The longer your luteal phase the longer you're producing the progesterone which maintains the uterine lining for implantation. Now I know that some women have pretty good luteal phases, but don't produce enough progesterone to sustain an implantation, so once the determination has been made through several months of charts that your luteal phase is of sufficient length, blood tests can be done to make sure you're producing enough hormone to sustain a pregnancy.

If you aren't there are many ways you can take progesterone supplements... creams, pills, injections etc. to increase your progesterone level after ovulation.

I did have a missed miscarriage last May so i thought i was about 12 weeks pregnant when in fact the feutus had stopped growing at about 6 - so if i did have a luetal defect i guess that wouldn't have happened based on the info. I'm thinking i may o early in my cycle also i started testing on CD 16 based on my 33 ish day cycle so i may have missed it!
