question about meter readings

Ok so we are on paperless billing Ive just logged in online to have a look at the account, now when we moved in we have a brand new meter put in and the people before where on prepay...

Now here is the problem

Meter reading from 0000 - 269 in the period from getting in installed to january says our use though was 3003.00...


I always thought that the number different on the meter was your usage so on that one our usage would of only been 269? Its the gas meter if that makes any difference..

Nevermind I worked it out lol was have a thick moment thinking it would work the same as the electric but oh no that would be too easy wouldn't it...
