Hi girls

My friend at work had her 20wk scan this week, but they could only just see the spine, and nothing else, as they say her placenta is low, and right in the centre of the front wall of her uterus. They told her to go back in two weeks, but if they still cant see organs/head/extremties etc, she'll have to go to the big hospital in bristol instead.

how common is this, and does it resolve itself?

My placenta is low and partially covering my cervix. I think the stats are that 95% of placentas move up and out of the way as the uterus grows so your friend should be fine :)

I don't have a low lying placenta, but do have mine on the front wall. At my 20 week scan in Holland they couldn't get a clear image of the heart and after trying for ages send me to the hospital to get it checked instead. They have better equipment there and as it turned out, the guy was just a whole lot more experienced as well. They did manage to check the heart and I've not heard a thing mentioned about it again until my growth scan last week (at 33 weeks something days). The placenta has moved up and is now nicely out of the way of everything, though still on the front meaning I don't feel any kicks.

At 20 weeks it really will just be a referral to hospital to make sure everything gets checked properly before the 24 week mark. As said above, it's likely the placenta will move out of the way later on in pregnancy and not cause any reason for concern what so ever =)

I hope so for her as this is baby #3, and she had elective c-sections before, so needs to be having one this time, cant help but wonder if she'll be able to if it doesnt move..

My placenta was on the front wall but I didn't have any problems with it. x

Placentas can and do move. Mine moved from low down to at the back at the bottom and is now at the top at the front.
