Girls I wanted to ask a question fo rmy sister. She is 14 weeks and today gp tried to hear hb with doppler. No hb found. I know its sometimes hit and miss but she is very worried now after what happened to me. Doc said come back in a month. I think thats very bad considering she is my doc too and knows how late I lost Matthew and how worried my sis will be now.

Has anyone else had problems with finding hb at 14weeks.

didnt want to read and run but Im not sure, maybe she should try again and if she still cant find it ask for a scan x

My mw said they wouldn't use a doppler till 20 weeks as it can cause so much worry when it is so hit and miss earlier on - she should maybe get a scan if it's stressing her out.

If she is really conserned pop to A&E or phone through to your midwife directly they will normally be more helpful

Thanks girls. The doc should not have tried. She made a huge mistake with that one. I've been doing some research online and apparently if you have a tilted uterus it can be a few weeks later when you can hear with doppler. My sis does have a tilted uterus so I've told her that and she is slightly calmer now.

She actually works in a hospital so she is going to get it checked tomorrow at work.

My sis had a scan today and all is well.

Pippa - this is Ireland - doctor led care all the way here. Midwide led care is only starting to come in here and boy the criteria is strict. Any slight problems and you are outa there so fast its unreal. Homebirths are virtually unheard of. Very old style system - doctors and hospital births. Midwifes will do the deliveries but only if they are totally straightforward. They are not even allowed to artifically rupture membranes or do stitches. You UK girls have way more options.

I had the doppler used on me with harry @ 18 weeks and they couldnt find the hb then, so i had a scan arranged for the following day (i was very ill at the time, in hospital with server dehydration, so think that also played a part in having the scan) the mw did say to me at the time that it can be hard to find the hb even at that stage.

with this pregnancy @ 26 weeks i went to maternity ward as baby had not moved all day and they hooked me up to the monitor to check all was ok and they even struggled then to find hb. However, if i was your sister i would possibly contact my midwife (or docs again) and ask for a scan to put my mind at rest!!

Hope all works out well hun. xx
