Questions about a midwife..

Hey guys, im 21 wks along with my first. I have only had one dr appt so far because of insurance issues. I am not considered high risk or carrying multiples. Ive always liked the idea of a midwife and natural birth. However i do want to give birth in a hospital in case anything does go wrong (i have a history of seizures when im stressed or my temperature rises too quickly). However, i was wondering about how i would go about getting a midwife, and if i even can this far along. I have a private insurance, but do midwives even take insurance or are they like doulas, where its an out-of-pocket cost type thing? I live in the US in California, if any of you have had midwives and can share your answers/stories that would be so helpful! Sorry its so long, thanks in advance

The MW I went to took my insurance. They didn't deliver in the hospital though. There are some OB practices around here that do also have MWs. I think they deliver in the hospital (I know they do prenatal care).
