I had been getting on and off contractions since the 16th of october, sometimes regular but because it had happened too many times I just kept writing it off as false labour.
On the 20th about an hour after I woke up the contractions started up again. I presumed they were false labour contractions and not actually opening my cervix. So I ignored them and just went about as usual. I was 38+5 and sure I had more time left. They were still irregular but getting progressively more uncomfortable. At about 4pm I put my toddler down for a nap in my bed and decided to try to nap through the pain. I couldn't sleep so I began timing them; 8-10mins apart. Not a proper pattern so just practice contractions again.
At about 6:30pm I stood up and felt a warm trickle. I thought I had peed myself so I started towards the stairs to go clean up and I felt another. When I got to the toilet I felt a little gush and it was pink when I wiped. I couldn't believe it was my waters. So I went to get a pad and I heard the phone ring to which my 4yr old answered. I was still trickling but I wasn't entirely sure yet. I took the fone off my daughter, it was my mum who had called. She asked how I was. I told her i think my waters had gone and she told me she would be right over. I called my husband and arranged for him to pick her up.
9:20pm
We got to the hospital triage around 9:20 and the contractions were really bad now but not enough for me to start making noises. At the time it felt like they were taking forever but I think they took about 10mins to see me. They asked a urine sample and at this point I was having trouble walking. I came out of the toilet and gave DH the sample to give to the midwife while i went to sit on the bed. The contractions were a bitch now and on the next one I had to let out a f**************ck!!!!! I could hear the lady in the next bed behind the curtain nervously talking to her OH. I gagged loudly and got to the toilet just in time to throw up and then and a contraction hit, I got down on all fours in that toilet, I didn't care at that point, the pain was just too much. I hobbled back to the bed and told dh get the midwife NOW! Someone came promptly and I immediately asked for something to throw up in. Another contraction hit and I yelled I'm getting the urge to push now. Some more midwives/staff showed up and i asked for pain relief and was quickly given gas and air.
9:45pm
A midwife checked how far dilated I was, only 6 cm and she apologised and said something about how she had to check for something but I couldn't understand what she was saying and the pain was getting worse so I was probably taking too much gas and air. I could hear a slow beep beep and sound went into slow motion and i thought that I was dying. It was actually just too much gas and air that had that effect. I stopped the g&a to come back to present and another contraction hit and that contraction made me yell my lungs out like nothing I've ever known in my life. She said I was only 7cm. I wanted to try to get through this labour without making noises but now it was like something had taken over me and I just couldn't control it.
They got a wheelchair and took me to the labour ward. This happened so quickly it was almost a blur. I was wheeled over still sucking on gas and air and I let out another aaaahhhhh, the 3rd noise was more like a growl and i don't know where these noises were coming from. I heard someone say she's going to start pushing. I got on the bed and they hooked me up to the machine. They told me the machine indicated I was fully dilated and baby was not doing well, her heartrate was dropping so I needed to push her out now. The machine was connected to a central screen and the doctors entered the room shortly after seeing the falling hb. They asked for permission to clip something to her head to monitor her and I said yes. Her hb was falling below 100 and they told me to start pushing and if I couldn't do it the doctors would get her out.
9:55pm
I don't know how but I managed to get her out in 4 pushes it couldn't have taken longer than a few minutes. She was a tiny 6lbs 2oz and I think that's probably why I didn't feel the ring of fire as she crowned. Either that or my other two had stretched me out. They put her on me and I asked them not to cut the cord. They did so anyway because she was having trouble breathing.
I had a small 2nd degree tear that I didn't feel and have had no problems with. I was told afterpains get worse with each child but I had not expected them to be as painful as they were, almost as bad as the contractions. It took about a week before they disappeared.
Poppy is doing much better now, she has surpassed her birth weight and is feeding loads and is pretty much a happy baby I had nicknamed her in my bump as Poppy so we call her Poppy but I have named her Amaris.
