I've decided that I would like to BF my baby when he's born, the only thing is I have pretty sensitive nipples!! always have done and was wondering how I will cope with this new sensation! What does it feel like? and does it make it more awkward if your nipples are pretty sensitive or is it something you just get used to? My boobs/nipples have already changed a huge amount to what they were in all different ways lol, I'm asumming this is to prepare for BF?! But its something I really want to do so would persevere!

When I tried to bf it was verrrryyy painful because she had a really strong suck, I had help from the maternity nurses too to ensure the latch was right, I stopped for various reasons...

Most women will tell you it can take a few weeks to desensitize them and then it feels fine.

I never had any problems with pain. You never know really till you give it a go. Good luck.

I can't bear for my nipples to be touched usually and cringe if something brushes against them but I have managed to breastfeed all four times as, once baby is latched on and feeding well it doesn't irritate at all:happydance:

If it hurts (it can admittedly be a bit uncomfy for the first 30secs of a feed) then there is a latching on problem...breastfeeding should not hurt and if it does you need to seek help with the latching on, once that part is sorted it makes breastfeeding much easier:cloud9:

Good luck babe, don't hesitate to pm me if you need any extra info as I am a trained Breastmate:hug:

Hi, just wanted to reassure you too. Just like you, and HEVZ, I have v sensitive nips and was worried I wouldn't be able to bf. However all has been fine. I was very lucky and stayed for 4 nights, post natal, at a birth centre because I knew I would get LOTS of support with bf and I did. The BEST tip I had was to use a nipple cream (lanisoh one was good 4 me - bad spelling) after EVERY feed in the 1st few days as naturally your nipples need to adjust to having a baby there often.

As long as you and bub get a good latch, there wont be any problems!

I had really sensitive nipples before Jay was born. They were quite sensitive for the first few days of bfeeding but they didn't take long to get better, I just used lashings of Lansinoh for a couple of weeks :D

See, I had help from maternity nurses who are trained... and acording to them she was latched fine. But it literally hurt so much I would have to pull her off...

Perhaps if it hadn't hurt that much I would have stuck with it?

I agree it shouldn't hurt if you get a good latch. A good latch didn't come naturally to me and Caitlyn though, and it did hurt for a couple of days.

i must say, when i first started BFing it did hurt, even with everyone telling me it shouldnt hurt...it bloody did! i think everyones different, it hurt but she wasnt doing it wrong, and after a few days it was fine again...just took time to get used to it!

as for the sensitive nipples, i HATE having my nipples touched, it really drives me mad, i get that nails down a chalkboard feeling, but feeding ur baby is nothing like that! i wouldnt worry hun

When Amelie was first born it hurt for about 20secs each feed but now I have no pain at all b/c she knows how to latch on properly now. It'll be new for you and baby so it just takes a bit of time to get a good position.
