I know this thread is old, but I'm finding a bit more activity in our Books section and wanted to add my suggestions for your list!

Check out Barbara Kingsolver - a fantastic American author! I particularly liked Poisonwood Bible and Animal Dreams.
I'm also a big fan of Alan Bradley's Flavia deLuce mystery series - so funny, so well-written!

Megan Mccafferty has the best chick-lit book series for "mindless" reading. Check out the Jessica Darling series!

Ooh, the Poisonwood Bible is very good! I read it as part of a class in high school but have read it again a couple of years ago.
