Hi

Can you recommend a good 5 door family car which would be economical to run in petrol, tax and insurance? Looking to spend no more than £10k for something with low mileage and less tha 3 yrs old. Also needs to have a big boot/trunk as we're about to invest in a double pram lol
Currently driving a 3 door ford fiesta which has been great but with baby no.2 on its way I cant handle the 3 drs anymore, not with teo youngsters:-(

Many thanks xx

I got a Citroen Xsara Picasso when I was pregnant.....great boot space, easy on petrol, not expensive on tax or insurance! Lots of space for strapping in carseats & you can actually walk from the front to the back as their is space between the front seats, I find it great in bad weather....I just put the carseat in & then get in myself & walk back to strap it in....saves me & baby from getting wet! Its also up a little higher which is a lifesaver for your back when strapping in carseats all the time!

We just got a 2010 (early 2010 not mid year 2010 when they did a design change to the doors) Vauxhall Meriva and I looooove it. Got it for just under 5 grand and it's perfect for us.

I have a Peugeot 307, it's a 51 plate but the newer ones look fairly good too x

I have an 06 Seat Altea. The back seats move backwards and forwards so you can create as much or little boot space as you want. Got the 1.9 diesel, so defo cheap to run :)

Just bought a Citroen c3 Picasso 3 years old for just over 7k 1.6 Diesel engine £100 tax a year. All reviews in this smallish MPV are great for a family car. Spacious, cheap to run, stylish. The boot is a good size and the back seats also move to create more boot space. Also good safety features and its set a bit higher which is good for getting the car seat in and out and for driving.

wow I haven never heard of any of these cars! I feel today like its UK or US....with Canada just dancing around naked lol.

I've been driving a 95 Corolla for the past 6 years. Love it. Great on gas. Don't recommend it for another LO lol.

Useless input, sorry! One of those days!

We have a Citroën Grand Picasso diesel. It was 3 years old when we got it and had under 20k miles and cost ca 9k. The boot is huge and has to be as we have a double stroller. All seats (except the driver's obviously) have isofix. I think it looks very nice and has lots of details inside that are very clever and thought through. So I would recommend that :)

Ford Focus?

My ILs have one. Great boot space, they used to have a pushchair & wheelchair in the boot.

They are usually cheapish to buy & insure. Not sure about economy but I would say the 1.6 petrol would be fairly cheap to run. Generally I would look at diesels but the price of diesel no longer means they are cheaper to run. We have a 2.0TDCi which is actually rather expensive to run, more than the 2.0ltr petrol I had.

We got a Toyota Corolla last Feb when TTC (its 2006 plate) and I love it, its amazing :) Cheap insurance 2.0 turbo diesel and is awesome on fuel (better than my 1.2 clio I had!!)
I can get a double or 2 single prams in the boot.

Only thing is, they stopped making the corolla and started the Auris so if you did want a newer one, you would have to get the Auris :) xx

At the moment we have a 2009 Toyota Yaris, but the boot is small and we will defiantly be getting a bigger car soon. But before that we have a 51 plate ford focus and it was great. the boot was massive and back of the car was as well.

Have a look at the skoda octavia, spacious inside and roomy boots. They are very popular within the taxi trade where they have proved themselves time and time again

what about a vw polo? they are alot roomier than you think and the tax and insurance on them is good. I haven't got one yet so can't recommend but that's what i'm hoping to get when my ford ka goes to car heaven

Another vote for a Ford Focus here too :) Roomy inside and a large boot. We run a 1.6 petrol and I've always found Fords to be fantastically reliable too. Good luck with whatever you go for :flower:

I have a new shape micra. I can fit 3 carseats in the back easy peasy but the boot is very small so not good for a double :( However the insurance and tax are cheap and its soooo economical to run. I hardly put any petrol in and I use it loads. It also done well in saftey tests. x

i have a 12 plate one

brilliant. i only have a three door but omg its massive!!!!so much space in them. I dont have kids but i have had my boyfriends little brothers in it, and a pram in the boot and all seems to fit fine :)

I just got myself a VW Golf bluemotion. does about 68 combined mpg. it's good loads of room though I haven't "family" tested it yet. it's 4 years old and I spent 9k on it. not sure what insurance is like yet as I'm still on the 7 day free insurance.
