Has anyone seen an improvement with their baby's reflux by changing formula?

we've been trying gaviscon-had a few days of it seeming to work but now we are back at stage one...the being sick has come back.

i can't get to see a gp for at least a week (currently swapping and are booked for check up with nurse on tuesday before we can get seen).

so my husband is out trying to buy a different formula to try, see if that makes any difference. we've got nothing to loose i guess?

hes currently on cow and gate for hungrier babies by the way, im dreading him being hungry all the time though.....may need to wean sooner then i planned.

i really dont know how to answer this hun but was thinking, do you think hungrier baby may be too thick for him to keep down and thats why its coming back up

that may be wrong was just thinking

hope you sort something soon

my friends baby has reflux and she is on SMA reflux milk and she is doing great on it, i think its SMA I WILL DOUBLE CHECK THOUGH lol

yes thats whats she is on its called sma stay down and is especailly for babys with reflux good luck hun

I put Jasmine on a formula with less iron which has helped... Though at his age there is no reason why he cant start solids and it will likely help.

i heard about the sma staydown-but apparently i need to ask my gp for it? its not on the shelves in the supermarket. ill definately ask the gp when i see her.

will weaning really help? i have been considering trying him with some food soon-i hear so much conflicting information and comments though! some say yes and some say no!

I have to use the cow&gate comfort. Which is alos for easy digestion. This really helped when i changed and the milk is alot thinner than regular milk so it may be right what lollylou1 is saying about the hungrier milk is too thick??
When are you allowed to introduce baby rice i know my friends LO had to go on this early as she couldn't fill her up!!!!
Hope thats some help xx

he used to be on normal cow and gate (and so thinner milk) but was sick with that too, so not sure its that to be honest.

also why do they give gaviscon to thicken the milk up, if thicker milk actually makes it worse? very confusing!

he is pretty much old enough,i would say, its only baby rice and things like that he will start on and they are bland as hell with nothing in them cant harm him,i weened lilly, at 4 and half months she was sooooo ready for and i told my HV wat i was doing and she just gave me some tips on wat to give her she was great good luck with hun, i hope you get it sorted it cant be nice to see your baby not keeoping his food down:hug::hug::hug::hug:

Hi hon, another mum to a refluxer here.

Firstly, when you see your GP ask for a referal to a peadatrician. Most GPs do not know what is available to treat reflux, gaviscon is the 'starter' treatment for it, but there are lots of other things to try.

Thicker milk helps, thats why the gaviscon thickens it up, it stays in the tummy easier and splashes up less causing less pain.

Unless LO is lactose intolerent changing formula doesnt help all the time, although when i changed my LO onto hipp organic she preferred the taste and because she was so fussy on the bottle i benefited with the extra hour on the bottle (hipp can last for 2 hours), which made life a little easier for me.

I'm not aware of what else you are trying in terms of feeding sitting up, elevating the cot to 30 degrees etc?

We weaned LO on the advice of the pead at 4.5 months and it has dramatically improved the reflux!

thanks ownedbyspud for the reply, we've tried the usual tricks-sitting upright etc but this doesnt make much difference. i will ask to see a peadatrician-now that you've said about the gps not being too good on reflux. i hate being told 'babys do sick up though'....i know that but this is def more the a bit of posseting.

Good luck, if you cant wait for the referral or LO gets worse, just take her into A&E and at least you will get to see a pead.

Hang in there it will get better

HEY Hun, you can buy sma stay down from boots. Or go to any chemist and they can order it in for you (my friends baby is on it and it works great) And she doesnt get it from doc as he wont prescibe it due to cost. :) XxX

Hi. My baby has reflux and I was give 3 choices for it. (1) thickener - carobel by cow&gate (2) change the formula to ready made thickener milk (3) zantac. I am using the carobel and it is really going down well with my baby.

Don't know if this has been suggested yet, but sometimes its not the formula but the bottles, or a combination of bottle and formula. Some bottles bring in too much air, which gives babies reflux problems. Good luck, hope you find something that works!
