My 4 week old has begun being very sick during and up to 2-3 hours after a feed. He struggle a bit with wind but not all the time. I cannot lie him down on his back as he cries or is sick. Therefore I have to hold him all day and night.
So the doctor gave me gavison on Thursday, no changes yet just lumpy sick now.ivevalso changed to dr browns bottles. I'm going to get weight checked Monday. If no change in sickness by Monday I'm considering changing to sma staydown milk.
Anyone else have any advice or suggestions? Thank you

when your Lo is sick is it alot at that one time/ for example is it like a whole bottle projectile vomit or just smaller bits here and there?

My son has reflux he will sometimes bring up a whole bottle. hes on infant gaviscon which does help him.

my nieces baby is pretty sicky after each bottle not like projectile but i have suggested to her that she changes milk to either a different brand or the comfort one.

I wish I had some advice for you but I am having the same problem. He will spit up feed for about an hour after a feeding then clear liquid till the next bottle. So frustrating!

That sounds like baby reflux to me!

My LO would projectile vomit about 3-5 times a day. It could be 5 minutes after eating or an hour. It was awful.

As PP mentioned about the clear liquid, that's most likely acid from their stomach being empty when they vomit.

They should probably be on something to stop the acid from forming, like Prilosec or Prevacid (PPI-Proton Pump Inhibitors) or Zantac, which blocks the acid. Usually they start with Zantac, of that doesn't work they go to a PPI.

And yes, laying your baby down flat is the worst thing for reflux. Here are some tips I've learned along to way:

1. Keep baby upright for about 30 minutes after feeds. That helps the acid to not come back up and hurt.

2. Invest in a crib wedge so they can sleep on a 45 degree angle. We use a "Nap Nanny." She sleeps really well in it and it keeps her inclined for comfort.

3. Milk protein/soy allergies and reflux go hand in hand, so you may want to try switching their formula for something hypoallergienic, like Enfamil Nutramigen, Similac Alimentum, Neocate, or Elecare. Neocate and Elecare are better choices as the proteins are broken down more than with the Alimentum or Nutramigen. Warning: They all stink, so don't be surprised if they hate it at first.

4. Always give them their medication (Zantac or Prilosec/Prevacid) on an empty stomach as it works much better that way, and make sure they are getting the full dose. It takes a few weeks to really see a difference, but just be patient.

5. You can thicken feeds with rice cereal to help it stay down better. But if your LO does have the allergy, make sure there is no soy in the rice cereal you're using (I learned that the hard way). Beechnut makes theirs soy free. Gerber rice cereal has soy in it.

6. Laying them on their side helps a lot too. We've found this to be the best for our little girl. Always on the right side as that will usually stop their stomach from emptying and it relieves the reflux.

7. For bad gas, you can give them a probiotic in their formula. We use one called "Flora Baby." It's organic and it's in powdered form. Once a day does the trick. If you end up switching the formula to hypoallergenic, the Nutramigen has a probiotic in it, but if your LO likes their bottles warm, it will cause the probiotic to not work, so you would still need to use the extra probiotic if you warm the bottles.

I hope these tips work for you ladies. My daughter takes Zantac twice a day (we tried Prilosec, which is the stronger medication but she gagged and vomited everytime we gave it to her) and is also on Similac Alimentum. She is a completely different baby now. She's actually happy, she eats more because she's not in as much pain, she doesn't power vomit at all. It's like a complete 180 degrees from where she was when we first started this journey.

Good luck. I hope your LO's grow out of the reflux soon!!

Thank you so much for all the tips.

Yes it's a whole bottle that comes up and with force so guessing that's classed as projectile. I switched to stay down today and the 2 feeds he has had have come up fast! I might try infacol before the feed and see of that helps. I'm also going to see the doctor tomorrow to see if any of the medicines suggested can help. I keep him up for well over an hour after feeds but he still won't lie down. Is it safe to put a 4 week old on their side?
I've tried elevating crib but that down help loads but then maybe it isn't elevated enough as only using a towel under and not great.

I hope I find a solution fast as I'm exhausted not able to put him down and compnstantly cleaning up sick, also just worried about him as its not nice :(

Yes, you can put your baby on their side. My daughter is only 6 weeks (3 months actual) and only 7 lbs, and we have no problem with her on her side. I put her back up against the couch cushions, and then roll up a towel covered in a baby blanket for front support, and lay her down that way. That was actually the ONLY way I could get her to take regular naps in the day time. My SIL had her baby sleep like that even in her co-sleeper for months. We just like the Nap Nanny night.

I think the towel under the mattress is a great idea. Your LO's reflux/power vomiting may be too severe for a wedge maybe? Or maybe you're right, maybe it's not inclined enough.

The stay down formula, is that with cow's milk or soy? I'm really thinking it's an allergy. If you bring it up to the doctor they'll probably ask you if there is blood in the stool, but even if there is not, they don't have to have all of the symptoms to have the allergy.

And yes, it sounds like your LO needs something more than calcium bicarbonate (gaviscon).

I've been referred to peadeatrician this morning but then had him weighed this afternoon and he has lost 5oz in a week so hv concerned and may have to see someone sooner.

Thanks for the advice, I've added a post today updating my baby had pyloric stenosis and needed an operation.
