Hi, I wondered if there is anyone on here who has relocated from the UK to another, hotter country, and taken their dog with them?

My OH has got a new job in Gibraltar, so we are relocating! Me, OH, LO and Alfie our Deerhound!.... I know the rules of going in to the country with a dog but I was just wondering if anyone has experience on taking a dog who is used to the UK weather to a hotter country?

There is absolutely no way I will rehome Alfie! He is my 1st born!! I have even told my OH that unless Alfie comes with us we will not be going! :)

Also, whilst on topic!! Has anyone ever lived in Gibraltar? Any advice??

There is a lady on here who relocated to there she has two girls I think her user name starts with laura she's she's in toddler section alot.

No advice were relocating to hopefully but don't have pets. Whenare you moving? X

Yes Tikanni, you and Leo can come anytime :)

Thanks Soph, I'll post over there too :).... We're hopefully moving in July time! Where are youu moving to?

Spain hopefully around re same time as you are. X

Cool! We're also looking at apartments in Spain, close to the Gibraltar border!

Congrats on moving

My only advice would be to be prepared to clip him.
Also, I would think seriously about leaving him with friends/family for the first month, get yourselves moved, settled, orientated etc.

Firstly it will mean when he does come over you'll be up and ready to pour attention into him, you'll be settle in a house, know where to walk him, buy his stuff etc. Also if for any reason it's not what you want you won't have to put him into quarintine should you come home.

That's a great idea, thanks :)........... Luckily my sister has offered to look after him. It also means that we can fly the 1st time and then drive down with him later........ I'd hate to put him on a flight!

You will need to look up about getting him a passport and jabs etc.

Yeah a drive will be longer but he'll be with you and you can stop etc

The flights are ok (prob my preference as our dog didn't much like cars!) but a faff as most companies prefer kenneling for 24h on departure and arrival. Airpets are wonderful if you do want to discuss it.
We moved both our cats UK to NZ - now what's a hell of a flight lol

Leaving the UK is pretty easy (about £150) in jabs plus microchipping specialist wrming/testing and passport but coming back is a nightmare.

Our cats found it so much easier moving in with us when they arrived as the house was set up and 'their' stuff was around.

Thanks for replies! He already has his passport and has been recieving his rabies jab for the past 3 years, so we'll be okay getting out of the country on that part........ Yeah I've heard it's harder to get back in to UK but hopefully that won't happen for a while! x

Or i could drive over with him and get a holiday out of it :)

We recently moved from the UK to California in a high dessert where it reaches over 120f which is about 49 celcius I think.
It hasn't been that hot yet, but its reached the low 90's and its bloody hot lol. If your gonna walk him during hot spells best to do it super early in the morning. Or really late at night.

Our dog is a German Shepherd so he hates the heat and loves the snow!! Lol. It was fairly easy for us as DH is in the military so it was kinda all planned out for us, how we had to go about everything.

Did you take your dog with you from UK?

Yeah, I'm worried about the heat! But he hates the rain so I know he'll do well there!

My OH's job startsasap, but me, Tom and Alfie will be staying here until we sell the house, which is going on the market on Monday! As we can't afford to rent and pay the mortgage!........ So goodness knows how long that will take! I'm hoping until Sept/Oct itme but that might be a bit optomistic!!

We'll go visit once a month till then and Alfie will stay with family. When it comes to finally moving over there we will be driving as I don't think Alfie will cope on a plane, plus he's the size of a small horse!!!!!!
