Hi all

It has been agreed I can return to work as a job share, doing 18 hours per week.
I will be working mon/tues and wed morning. Will I have to use my annual leave entitlement when one of my days falls on a public bank holiday ?

Thanks for your help :p

look closely at your contract about annual leave entitlemet.

I work part time 60% of full time hours and am entitled to 60% of the total bank holidays in a year. The difference is taken off my overall leave.

You will get the bank holidays off which land on your working days so you won't have to use annual leave; the question is whether you have to pay back any extra bank holidays!

could you speak to your HR?

It is dependent on what is stated in your contract but usually bank holidays are not actually classed as separate holiday days - they are jut grouped within your total holiday entitlement.
An employer does not have to pay you for having a bank holiday off so you would then have to book it as a holiday day in order to receive pay for it.

The part time lady in my office usually does Mon, Tue and alternate Wednesdays, but if it's a bank holiday and she isn't entitled to it she works a different day that week so still does the right hours.

I work 0.5 of a job and don't work Monday's. they work out 8 bank Hols a year x 0.5 then if the bank hol fals on a day I should work I take 0.5 off of my leave.SO if you work a Monday and it falls on a bank ol I would think you would owe a percentage of that day.But your company may be totally different to mine! Xx

If your employer gives it employees entitlement to bank holidays, then they will have to give this to you, but on a pro rata basis. It sounds like you're going to be working half the amount of a full timer, so in a normal bank holiday year (8 bank holidays) you would be entitled to 4. This year there's an extra bank holiday in June, so you'll get an extra half day.

You can work out in advance how many bank holidays will fall on days you're due to work - if you don't have enough bank holiday entitlement to cover them all (which is likely given most fall on Mondays) then your employer can either allow you to use annual leave or let you make the time up.

It can sometimes go the other way, where not enough bank holidays fall on days you're due to work (your job share partner may find this happens to them), in which case they can just use the extra days wherever they like.

I never understood the bank holiday rules... Monday was my day off last year which was annoying. When I had Tuesday's off the previous year it was great s I got the Monday and Tuesday! I did query it once with payroll who just said it's unfortunate if your day off falls on a bank holiday!
