I woke up in the early hours of Saturday morning with mild camps in my lower back. It wasn’t extremely painful, but enough to keep me awake for a few hours. Saturday we had poached eggs on toast for breakfast and went into town – I was still having pains in my lower back which were now coming in waves every 10-15 minutes or so. By the time we got home at 5pm the pains were regular and getting quite intense. We had food, put a film on and sat down. I had a hot bath to relieve the pain a bit and OH put our DS1 to bed. At 7pm the pains were every 5 minutes but were starting to become really painful – paracetamol wouldn’t touch the pain. I phoned the labour ward and the said to hold out until they were every 3-4 minutes max. I got on all fours in the living room and was breathing through them but by 9pm I couldn’t handle the pain anymore and knew we had to get going. The hospital is a 25 minute drive away and I was really dreading the car journey with these contractions! I called my mum and she and my dad came over at half 9. My mum followed us to the hospital and my dad slept on the settee to look after DS1. We arrived at the hospital at 10pm and I was seen at 10.30pm. I was praying to be at least 4 cms dilated because by now I could barely walk and was shouting though the contractions. My midwife, Emma, had a feel and I was 6-7 cms dilated – hoorah! I was eligible to go straight onto the gas and air – my best friend! I spent the next 2. 5 hours concentrating on the gas and air and working though the contractions. I was amazed at how calm and serene it all was – my DDS1 was born during the afternoon and I couldn’t breathe out into the gas, I yelled though each contraction until my throat was raw – so I was pleased that I was coping with the gas and breathing in and out during each contraction without any noise! My waters were bulging but still intact at this point. At 1am the contractions were getting very intense and I stated shouting owww really loudly and midwife saw this as a cue that I was fully dilated. She asked what I was feeling and all I kept saying was that I had lots of pressure in my bum, and my lower back and bum were so painful.. she asked me to hop onto the bed to do an internal and just as I got up onto the bed my waters popped and went everywhere. From that moment everything sped up and I felt a huge urge to push. Midwife told me to push with the next contraction and at 1.10am I started pushing. I found this the hardest part – baby kept bobbing back up inside and I was petrified I wouldn’t be able to get him out – I was exhausted by now and so out of it on gas and air that I didn’t think I’d have the energy to push him out. I had a ventouse deliver with DS1 and never really felt the pushing out part – so it was a strange feeling. I remember just feeling a burning sensation and very stretched!! Baby was getting tired and the three midwives present were telling me I had to push and get him out asap. I pushed with all my might and after 23 minutes of pushing, Reuben’s head came out. I asked if I could each down and touch it! Then out he popped and he was placed on my chest. This was a lovely feeling – my DS1 was whisked away when he was born. He was born on his due date – just! - 1.37am on Sunday 15th July – after 9 hours of established labour and just over 3 hours after arriving at the hospital. He was perfect - 7 lbs 15 ozs and 48 cms long. I had a 2nd degree tear and needed stitches. This wasn’t as bad as my episiotomy and bucket load of stitches I had after DS1! Gas and air was m fiend again whilst this was being done…
The midwife noticed that my waters were slightly stained with meconium and we would have to stay in for 24 hours for Reuben to be observed. We had our first breast feed and a cuddle and the midwife ran a bath for me. I sat up to get into the bath and felt very dizzy and unwell – midwife took my blood pressure but as it was so low she couldn’t find it at first and used 3 different machines until she could pick it up – 80 over 40. They noticed I had lost a lot of blood and called the doctor in. I was put on a drip which caused my uterus to clamp down and stop the bleeding. OH and mum went home as it was 4am by now and they would have to be up and looking after DS1 in 3 hours! The drip didn’t really work and I was given a jab in my leg and pessaries in my bum to make my womb contract further as by now I’d lost 700mls of blood. If this hadn’t worked, the doctor said they’d need to take me to theatre for a spinal to see what was going on inside – he thought I had retained some placenta even though the midwife insisted it had come out intact. The after-pains were horrendous; it was like being in labour again for another 12 hours. We were put into a room on our own until we were ready to go to the post-delivery ward. I was hoping to go home the following morning after Reuben had been observed for 24 hours but they took a blood sample from me and were not happy with my ion level – because of the blood loss it had dropped to 7.5 and they wanted it more around the 10 mark before they’d let me home. The doctor came to see me and said he wanted me to have a 2 pint blood transfusion as I’d lost a lot of blood, was pale and breathless and there was no way I’d recover my iron levels with diet and tablets alone as it was so low.. I had the blood transfusion and we spent our second night in hospital. I breastfed for the first 24 hours but had become so weak that I switched to bottle on the second day. I had another blood test at 5am the following morning and my iron levels had gone up and they were happy to finally discharge us. Reuben was jaundiced but alert and feeding well. We arrived home Tuesday afternoon – 17th. Reuben is wonderful – he’s now just over a week old, feeding well – 4 ozs every 3 hours – and sleeping well. DS1 was the world’s worst sleeper so we feel so lucky – Reuben is having just 2 feeds a night and going straight to sleep in his crib after each feed. We are totally in love –we are the proud parents of 2 gorgeous sons. Harrison is a wonderful big brother and we’ve all adjusted to life as a family of 4. I’m on ion tablets for a month and I feel great – so much more energetic than I did when I was pregnant! I said during labour I could never ever go through it again – but I’ve already forgotten the pain and miss being pregnant so much!
